Following a Brandweek panel last week, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Adweek that she was ready to move her network away from reporting live-plus-same-day ratings.“This move aligns us with how we evaluate the comprehensive performance of our shows, how we monetize our business and how our audience chooses to consume our content,” Burke said in a note to staff.“People used to plan their lives around television, now they plan television around their lives.”ABC will now focus first on live-plus-3 ratings, followed by live-plus-7 and then multiplatform-plus-35-day ratings.Fox ended the practice in 2015.“So our reporting will now align with our business and most importantly, our consumer.”

A team of archaeologists and its trusty drone are revealing an island community that once supplied valuable beads to the inland towns of the Mississippian culture, which thrived in the eastern United States from 800 to about 1600 CE.The high-resolution aerial laser scans mapped a massive complex of 37 oyster-shell rings, 23m to 136m across—the kind of rings that build up around coastal settlements through years of people eating oysters and discarding the shells. Some of the rings stood less than a meter high, but others loomed four meters above their surroundings.Assuming all the rings were used at about the same time, that means 200 or 300 people once lived on the long, low-lying 30-hectare island—and it looks like every household on the island was involved in making beads from lightning whelk shells.Digging in the open spaces, Barbour and his colleagues found the long-buried refuse of day-to-day life in layers 60 to 70cm deep: potsherds, charcoal, oyster and clam shells, and fish bones.Buried traces of pits and postholes suggest the presence of ancient houses but may also mark where racks or other structures once stood.

Probe predicted to outlive Earth on five-billion-year galactic tripNASA's Voyager 2, launched to study the Solar System's outer planets, has had its first readings from interstellar space, collected after travelling more than 11 billion miles over forty years, analyzed by scientists. It is only the second probe to have sailed beyond the heliosphere – the expansive region made of plasma and magnetic fields generated by the Sun.A lot of the findings confirmed what was discovered when Voyager 1 left our tiny back yard in the universe, which is useful in itself."The Voyager probes are showing us how our Sun interacts with the stuff that fills most of the space between stars in the Milky Way galaxy," said Ed Stone, lead author on one of the papers and a project scientist for the Voyager mission. The heliosphere is a giant protective bubble that shields the Solar System from galactic cosmic rays.

The same academic who, last year claimed that Bitcoin‘s 2017 bull run was sparked by market manipulation, is now saying that the cryptocurrency‘s astronomical surge was caused by a single individual. One single whale on cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex was reportedly able to drive up Bitcoin‘s price when it fell below specific values, according to the University of Texas Professor John Griffin and Ohio State University’s Amin Shams, Bloomberg reports.“Our results suggest instead of thousands of investors moving the price of Bitcoin, it’s just one large one,” Griffin told Bloomberg.“Years from now, people will be surprised to learn investors handed over billions to people they didn’t know and who faced little oversight.”The paper’s argument focuses on the theory that new Tether tokens are created without the dollars to back them, and then used to purchase Bitcoin, thus shooting up the price. To arrive at this conclusion, Griffin and Shams examined Tether and Bitcoin transactions carried out between March 1, 2017, and March 31, 2018, highlighting that Bitcoin purchases on Bitfinex increased whenever Bitcoin’s value fell by certain increments

The leaks were right: Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the latest expansion for the hit MMORPG at Blizzcon 2019 on Friday.World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will follow on from every other major WoW expansion to come before it.Instead of a level cap increase, things are actually decreasing back to the original Level 60 cap.Blizzard is promising to tune the leveling experience so that a full 1-50 run can be done through any chosen expansion, giving players the freedom to make a new character, play through an expansion of their choice, and then jump straight into the Shadowlands zones for the last 10 levels.Currently announced Shadowlands locations include Revendreth, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, and Bastion, which you might recognize from the recent leaks. The new leveling experience is tailored to offer something new (like a skill or trait) with every level, while the new Covenant feature will dish out two abilities across the new content; one exclusive to the chosen Covenant, and one exclusive to each character class.

Huawei is apparently working on a new tablet, and it looks pretty darn similar to an iPad Pro, according to leaked renders posted by 91Mobiles (via Android Central). The biggest difference seems to be its cameras — Huawei’s tablet appears to have a dual-lens back camera and a hole punch display housing a front-facing camera. It’s actually the second Chinese-made gadget we’ve covered today that cribs heavily from Apple — Xiaomi’s new smartwatch has a strong resemblance to an Apple Watch.Huawei’s new tablet might even adopt Apple’s “Pro” nomenclature — serial leaker Evan Blass said it will be called the Huawei MatePad Pro.The tablet seems to have a magnetic keyboard case like Apple’s Smart Keyboard Folio, but we don’t know if the case will be included in the box. There also appears to be a new stylus which looks to attach to the top of the tablet, possibly via magnets, like the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro.

Setup and updates take too longI spent a short while with the Amazfit GTS during the IFA 2019 trade show, and my first impressions were good.It was my first exposure to anything made by Amazfit, a popular brand for those trawling Amazon for tech bargains, which I had approached with trepidation, fearing I’d be met with disappointment. That first encounter led me to wear and use the Amazfit GTS for much longer, to see if it could elevate itself beyond being a cheap, cheerful, Apple Watch clone. The straps measure 20mm, and are a little small on bigger wrists.Amazfit has several colors, with the black-on-black model looking stealthily cool, and the red silicone strap standing out as the best alternative.

Ikea’s new Fyrtur smart blinds are finally making their way to the US after a delay earlier this year, but they only seem to be available in retail locations for now, with online purchases still listed as “not available.”As Ikea had announced earlier in the year, the US is only getting the Fyrtur blackout blinds, not the lighter Kadrilj model.Ikea is selling eight sizes of the blinds, ranging from 23 inches wide (for $129) to 48 inches (for $179).As my colleague Thomas Ricker notes in his review, the shades can’t be cut: they’re all 76 3⁄4 inches long, with the maximum length that they unroll to limited by the user as part of the setup process. While Ikea’s website doesn’t list all the models just yet, Reddit user HomeKit_Hero has helpfully compiled a full list of the different sizes, model numbers, and prices for the US versions, listed below:If you’re interested in picking up a set for yourself, you can check Ikea’s website to see if your local store has any in stock, although some Reddit users have recommended calling the store to ask about the model number directly, as the website doesn’t list all the sizes yet.

Early last year, the revival craze was in full swing among networks.Just a year and a half later, however, a straight-up TV revival has started to lose its luster. The Conners—which is what Roseanne morphed into after star Roseanne Barr was fired in May 2018—is still going strong, but Murphy Brown was canceled after just one season.NBC is ending Will & Grace this season after declining ratings, and The X-Files, whose 2018 season stumbled after its huge 2016 return, also seems to be done for good.Yet even as revivals stumble, nostalgia remains a strong draw for audiences, as proven during the past month by a pair of movies based on popular TV shows: El Camino, the Breaking Bad movie that debuted Friday on Netflix and in select theaters; and Downton Abbey, which has grossed $82.7 million at the U.S. box office since its release last month.Coupled with the Deadwood movie that aired on HBO in May and helped wrap up the critically acclaimed series, which abruptly ended in 2006, these movies show a potential new path forward for studios and creators as audiences’ appetite for revivals has started to wane.
