Facebook's effort to launch a new cryptocurrency called Libra has faced numerous setbacks from regulatory scrutiny to an exodus of key partners. But the social media giant and its partners signaled on Monday it's still planning to move forward with its plans to launch the new digital currency in 2020.Twenty one organizations, including Facebook, formally joined the Libra Association, which is overseeing the cryptocurrency.Since the social network unveiled plans for Libra in June, seven of its partners have dropped out of the project. That includes payment companies such as PayPal, Visa and Mastercard, which analysts saw as a key part of whether Libra gains traction.Lawmakers have also raised concerns that Libra could be abused for money laundering and other crimes.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has been a long, long time coming, yet after years of rumors followed by months of delays, the finished product is, well, distinctly first-gen.It’s for those who want the cutting-edge of smartphone technology no matter what it costs and how unpolished it is.Far more than even most flagshipsSamsung Galaxy Fold 2 release date and priceThe latest Galaxy Fold 2 release date rumors point to a launch in the first half of 2020.That’s a little vague, and given that the original Fold didn’t ultimately go on sale until September 2019 is probably also a little early, especially as we haven’t heard much about it yet.

After months of teases and leaks, there’s a lot we know about the Pixel 4.But the Pixel 4 isn’t the only thing we’re expecting to see at the upcoming Made By Google Event on Tuesday, October 15th at 3 p.m. BSTThanks to Google absorbing the Nest brand earlier this year, Google looks poised to announce a new wave of smart home products including a Google Nest Mini and a Google Nest WiFi.Leaks also suggest that Google is planning on launching a follow up to its flagship Chromebook – the Pixelbook – which was released back in 2017.And like every other big tech company this year, it seems Google may wade into the true wireless earbuds game with the Pixel Buds 2.Also, even with all the leaks and rumours, Google usually manages to have some last-minute surprises in store too.

Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell’s upcoming series Far Sector, is more than just a makeshift planet that nearly 20 billion people call home. It’s an experiment trying to figure out how to successfully bring three races of warring aliens together in a peaceful, harmonious way following the devastation of each group’s respective societies. When I spoke with Campbell recently about how he went about translating Jemisin’s ideas into visual information, he explained that it all really begins with his own deep understanding of the world the comic’s story takes place in.It’s always been kind of odd that there are so many human Lanterns from Earth even though the galaxy’s an awfully large place, but obviously Jo’s distinct amongst her peers as Far Sector opens. In your mind, who is Jo in relation to the larger Lantern Corps? How much of the established Green Lantern history is Jo familiar with?

Now that the Switch Lite is here, is it worth buying in place of the standard Switch? That is, unless you have a model HAC-001(-01) Switch, which was released in August.I’m not what you would call a Joy-Con fanatic, but I do have two pairs – the neon red and blue pair that shipped with my Switch and a pair of neon yellow Joy-Cons I picked up separately – that I swap in and out whenever the mood strikes.Something I decidedly do not miss are the four face buttons on the left Joy-Con that double as the standard Switch’s D-Pad.For my tastes, the D-Pad on the Switch Lite is a little small, but it’s leaps and bounds better than what we’ve got on the standard Switch. For me at least, the Switch Lite’s A, B, X, and Y buttons have a slightly softer press to them, meaning they aren’t quite as “clicky” as the face buttons on my Joy-Cons, but that’s really the biggest difference I was able to find.

Watching Raising Dion, Netflix’s latest sci-fi series about a gifted 8-year-old with superpowers, there’s one feeling that’s hard to shake: This doesn’t belong here. That is maybe a curious thought to have, especially since Netflix, on aggregate, skirts a traditional network identity (its four-year Marvel experiment notwithstanding). But Raising Dion, which is adapted from the Dennis Liu comic, feels more aligned with the PG-popcorn dramas of The CW and Freeform than the darker, quirkier stuff Netflix typically embraces.Netflix’s shows are typically the inverse; the streaming giant has always touted itself as a home for the boundary-pushers.But what’s become clear more recently, particularly with the release of Raising Dion, is that Netflix now wants to be our small-screen everything. As origin stories go, Dion’s (Ja'Siah Young) is ripe for symbolism.

As the company with the biggest presence and influence on the Internet, Google has taken it upon itself to make the Web a safer place. From misbehaving ads to insecure pages, Google has used its Chrome web browser to steer developers and administrators towards more industey best practices.Google boasts that Chrome users spend 90% of their time on secure HTTPS pages but soon it will be tightening the noose on remaining insecure content by blocking them completely starting next year.Google has been pushing for web page owners and developers to move over to secure and encrypted HTTP, a.k.a.It serves both as a warning for users as well as something like a shame campaign and it seems to have at least worked.Unfortunately, that HTTPS mark wasn’t exactly an accurate badge as even HTTPS pages may actually include insecure content.

We’re not still quite sure what Death Stranding is, and each new trailer only leaves us with more questions.Death Stranding is releasing next month, and if, like many, it’s going to be a first-day buy for you, then now’s your chance to score this Limited Edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle which just became available for pre-order.The development history behind Death Stranding is almost as interesting as the game itself. It’s the first creation of Kojima Productions, the new studio founded by Kojima, the iconic Japanese developer, in the wake of his falling out with Konami. Before Kojima’s abrupt departure from his former employer, his latest project was a horror game titled Silent Hills which was being co-developed with input from film director Guillermo del Toro. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Death Stranding, but what we do know is that it is built on the powerful Fox Engine (that made its debut with Metal Gear Solid V) and is an action-adventure game with stealth elements set in a bleak post-apocalyptic open-world setting.

Madrid, Spain: A smart shirt that measures lung function by sensing movements in the chest and abdomen has proved to be accurate when compared to traditional testing equipment, according to research presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress. This means they can now test out the smart shirts with patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).If successful, they hope this will allow doctors to monitor patients remotely for early signs that their condition is getting worse. When patients suffer an increase in their symptoms, such as coughing and breathlessness, they need to be monitored more closely. This is traditionally done in the clinic with equipment such as an exercise bike, facemask and computer. We wanted to see whether a smart shirt could provide an accurate and more practical alternative for measuring lung function."

Give a kid some Lego bricks, and chances are they’ll use their imagination to concoct a far-fetched creation like a firefighter using an elephant’s trunk to put out some flames.According to Lego, this will be the Danish company’s first global brand campaign in 30 years. While Lego has created international work in recent years, like its first-ever global holiday spot last year, its new “Rebuild the World” effort is the first in decades to spread a unified brand message globally.According to the toymaker, every character, animal and vehicle seen in the film is based on an existing or past Lego toy.The concept makes for interesting and playful snippets throughout the video—for instance, at one point, a man receiving a haircut turns his entire head around so his barber doesn’t have to move.Additionally, some digital out-of-home spots bring quirky Lego creations to life.

New research has revealed a Denisovan finger bone that’s unexpectedly human-like in shape – an odd observation, given the close relation of Denisovans to Neanderthals, whose fingers differed quite a bit from ours.To date, only five skeletal fossils are known from Denisovans: three molars, a mandible, and the tip of a pinky finger. That’s not much to go by, but the 50,000-year-old finger bone – discovered 11 years ago in Siberia’s Denisova Cave – yielded critically important genetic information. The research, led by E. Andrew Bennett from Paris Diderot University, revealed a finger that’s closer in shape to those of anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) than to those of Neanderthals – a surprise, given how closely related Denisovans are to Neanderthals.Fascinatingly, this finding doesn’t mean modern humans looked like Denisovans.Genetic evidence suggests modern humans interbred with Denisovans (and also Neanderthals), and that Neanderthals interbred with Denisovans.

Fresh off its Nintendo Direct announcements yesterday, the gaming company is already teasing a “new experience” for the Switch — some sort of bizarre new motion controller accessory that uses the console’s Joy-Con controllers, promising more details on September 12th.The teaser is light on details but it appears that there’s two pieces of the device: a primary, flexible ring that one Joy-Con half is inserted into, and which has some additional handles around the circumference that seems to be the main “controller”, and a secondary leg strap that the other Joy-Con goes in (perhaps for some fitness tracking features?)The video shows players vigorously squeezing the ring, jumping around, and running in place, which seems to imply that it’ll be some sort of fitness or workout experience, but without more details, it’s hard to tell what exactly Nintendo has planned.Nintendo isn’t a stranger to odd, motion controller based fitness products — the Wii console famously had Wii Fit, a fitness game that included a scale and relied on motion controlled mini-games for exercise. There was also the infamous Wii Vitality Sensor, a canceled accessory that would have measured player’s heartbeats for gameplay purposes, although what exactly it was meant to do was never made entirely clear.Whatever it is, it seems to be following in the footsteps of last year’s Nintendo Labo cardboard accessories, which also relied on the Joy-Con controllers motion controls and sensors to enable new and interesting gameplay mechanism.

But Washington has also been tepid in its approach, indemnifying Facebook and imposing a low (for Facebook) fine of $5 billion.Silicon Valley is steeped in a grow-at-any-cost culture, which the government will find challenging to overcome due to its own flawed culture. For years people were confused because Amazon's stock was soaring, but the company had yet to turn a profit.Stock prices weren't based on price-to-earnings ratios, but instead what Peter Thiel refers to as " escape velocity," when companies grow so big, so fast, that others in their competitive set can't keep up and eventually fall away. It's often thought that Silicon Valley's legend began at Xerox PARC, where the best and brightest cranked out numerous inventions we still appreciate today. While the legend may have begun at Xerox, I believe the culture began when Apple visited Xerox and borrowed/stole (depending on who you believe) the idea of the computer mouse for Apple's newest computer.
