In walking the long path to VR on the PC, I ve built a new gaming computer from scratch, bought peripherals out the wazoo, and, of course, pre-ordered both an Oculus Rift and an HTC Vive so I wouldn't have to choose between the two.Although Oculus founder Palmer Luckey had previously expressed the opinion that he didn't mind folks playing Oculus-exclusive games on the Vive, he has either changed his mind or been overruled by Facebook.Ars' Sam Machkovech shows the process of setting up room-scale VR for the HTC Vive.Specifically, everything is monstrously, horribly aliased to hell and back.Frontier has since formally acknowledged there are issues with Elite and the Vive. With HMD Image Quality set to maximum - which is default - the resolution sent to the Vive from the client is 3024x1680, which is then downsampled and distorted for the headset lenses.
Internet puzzles tend to drive people to the brink of insanity.Facebook user Antley Lamont Staten recently posted a photo of a puzzle that was clearly making his head hurt:Ok i don't get it?Another commenter who, after assumedly pulling out a handful of hair while trying to figure it out, proclaimed this after solving it: Omg.It s actually not a math problem at all.If you look at the sign to the left, it reads Share when you find the mitsake. Now excuse we while we go out and buy some Aspirin.
Photograph: Nasa Astronaut Jeffrey Williams worked two hours on board the ISS to inflate the space module Beam before Nasa told him to stop. Yesterday module would be inflated with compressed air and expand the length of 2.1 meters and a diameter of 2.4 meters to over 4 meters in length and a diameter of 3.2 meters. But when the module just expanded a few inches in two hours astronaut Jeffrey Williams received orders from the Johnson Space Center in Houston to give up the attempt. The idea is that the beam should be attached to the ISS in two years that NASA will be able to test for leaks. In the long term Bigelow also send up an inflatable module called Olympus that is twice as big as the entire space station. Inflatable modules, according to Robert Bigelow serve as a base for astronauts, but also be used as a hotel for space tourism.
Likely rooted in Hollywood s never-ending effort to print money without exercising an ounce of creativity, movie executives always seem keen on taking whatever video game happens to be hot at the moment and turning it into a movie.Even in the face of ridicule and a string of box office failures, we ll likely never see Hollywood stop trying to turn popular video games into hit films.DON T MISS: The iPhone 7 might actually be in troubleSo with the latest video game inspired movie disaster just around the corner read: Warcraft, which is set to hit theaters on June 10 , our sister site Variety recently compiled a list outlining the 7 worst video game adaptations of all time. But was this video game really deserving of a movie?Looking past the atrocity they pulled on the Goombas, this film was such a critical and financial disaster that Hoskins has gone on record saying it was the worst thing I ever did.The trailer for the forgettable 1993 film can be viewed below.
When brands release new icons and logos, previously loyal customers often groan with frustration. This happened when Instagram changed its app icon at the start of May.The flatter, more abstract design was described by Adweek as possibly "one of the biggest design fails of the year."But the industry trade title was wrong, according to new analysis from Dragonfly, a design-analysis app created by Black Swan and researchers from Queen Mary University of London. The new logo is actually 10% more engaging to the human eye than its predecessor, according to the app.Dragonfly uses a computational model to process the visual characteristics of what someone is looking at orientation, contrast, texture, luminance to assign a stimulus attention score to every pixel, demonstrating its attractiveness. The resulting graphics are heatmaps that display what grabs human attention in the first three seconds of interaction.Business Insider asked Dragonfly to analyze the old and new logos of 10 major brands, giving each a saliency score out of 100.Below are the results: View As: One PageSlides

Aside from sparklers, the only fireworks kids have access to are black snakes - the tiny pucks that grow into long ashen serpents as they burn.As far as pyrotechnics go, black snakes incredibly lame, except when YouTube s NightHawkInLight super-sizes them.Once the mix powdered sugar and baking soda ignites, it becomes a miniature active volcano that appears out of nowhere.
After years of crash-and-burn growth met with copious scandals and user complaints, Reddit is getting back to basics and trying to scale like your average Internet company, albeit one that boasts around 234 million unique visitors powering 8 billion page views per month.Instability everywhereIn February of last year, Weiner met over lunch with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian just to chat about how things were going at each other s companies.Soon Reddit would have quite a bit more to worry about than just the quality of their code and the growingly insurmountable amount of tech debt that was causing long-promised features like search and the ever elusive official Reddit mobile app to fall by the wayside.Through a somewhat cataclysmic turn of events that followed the firing of Reddit Director of Talent Victoria Taylor, users went wild and moderators began shutting down communities on the site in protest.CEO Ellen Pao resigned shortly after and another Reddit co-founder, Steve Huffman, returned to lead the site he had helped build in 2005.What came from later conversations with Huffman was the formation of what Weiner frames as a very clear focus on paying down a lot of tech debt, building a great platform, starting to build products for our mods and users, and then starting on some of our crazier ideas — the rocket science that we re not to yet, but will be soon.

The Firefly2, a high-end vape available in stores in June, aims to do for smoking what Apple products have done for our digital lives.Make it simple."I'm sure that in my subconscious while I was designing this, I had visions of Macs in my head," Williams, CEO and cofounder of San Francisco-based company Firefly, tells Tech Insider."To use the device, you remove the magnetic lid and fill its chamber with loose bud."The revamped vape is also 55% lighter and 33% smaller than the previous model, according to the company website. The Firefly2 syncs via Bluetooth to a smartphone app that lets users control the heat settings and get firmware updates. The Crafty captures old-school vape-lovers it's made by the company that developed the first mainstream vape, the Volcano while the sleek, stealthy Pax 2 is a magnet for vaping-newbies.The Pax 2 takes about 40 seconds longer than the Firefly2 to reach temperature, and uses conduction heating, which means it burns the material directly.More from Tech Insider:Google is opening a new driverless car facility near Detroit this yearApple has a huge decision to make about naming the iPhone AAPL This is, quite simply, the best WiFi router you can buyMost of the universe has no way of knowing that we existThere may be two new Xbox One consoles on the way MSFT NOW WATCH: 4 tips for people smoking marijuana for the first timeLoading video...

Chief among recommendations was to force video-on-demand providers, such as Netflix Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc. s iTunes, to dedicate at least a fifth of their catalogs to European works.Large numbers of questions and answers are raised or addressed in the extensive documentation that comes with them.Yes and no.It was previously believed the EU regulator wanted to unblock the geo-blocks, which would in theory have prevented companies from blocking access to their services if a user was accessing them from outside an approved area. Our members around the world love European programming, that s why our investment in European programming, including Netflix original titles created in Europe, is growing, said Joris Evers, a spokesman at Netflix. However, the proposed measures won't actually achieve that. This would benefit a shopper, browsing directly to a manufacturer or retailer s website in the EU, who was presented with a message saying they couldn t make a purchase because of the country they were accessing the store from.Under the new proposals, such blocks or higher prices imposed by the geographical location of a buyer would be banned.No.

It has been molded into a cheap Amazon Echo clone, coaxed into streaming movies and TV shows to living room televisions, and has provided the brains for countless Star Trek-inspired home automation systems.A recent addition to the code for Google s Android Open Source Project AOSP , the framework of Google s Android mobile operating system, suggests that official support for the Raspberry Pi 3 may arrive in the coming weeks or months.A custom Raspberry Android build would be a bit unorthodox for Google, admittedly — the search giant s historically limited its Android firmware involvement to partners of its Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets. But sanctioned support for the Raspberry Pi 3 might be perceived as a response to Microsoft s free, stripped-down version of Windows 10, IoT core, for the Raspberry Pi 3, which Microsoft made available late last year. And Android s not exactly new to the Raspberry Pi 3 — a number of developers managed to boot Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the newest version of Android, on Pi devices earlier this year. But an official distribution might contain a level of optimization and polish that unofficial projects lack, and might contain resources and documentation that d make installing Android s more than 1.5 million apps easier.
Libraries, those buildings that are so great for napping, perving on intellectual members of the opposite sex and reading Harry Potter in, are closing at an astonishing rate in the UK thanks to budget cuts and subsequent staffing issues. However, new figures show that, in a couple of cases at least, it s been costing more to shut the doors than to keep them open.A Guardian report says that that Carnegie and Minet libraries both in London soaked up a lot more cash after they were temporarily closed at the end of March than they would have done if they d been allowed to operate as usual.A Freedom of Information request covering the time between March 31st and April 15th shows that Lambeth council spent £2,212 a day £35,392.68 on intimidating-looking guards for the libraries, as bespectacled, banner-holding members of the public protested and staged an exciting-but-completely-unenjoyable-of-course occupation. Both libraries will be re-opened next year as private gym/unstaffed library confusing hybrid things.Maybe the gym bit will be deadly silent and the books bit pumping with 'Call On Me'-style hype tunes.
Twitter is about to get a little less complicated. The company said it s getting rid of some of its rules, which can be confusing and sometimes alienating to new users of its social-media service.Media attachments, such as photos, GIFs, videos and polls, will no longer count as characters against the limit. The company s product, notoriously difficult for newcomers to understand, has been steadily tweaked over the past couple of years to be more intuitive.Still, the San Francisco-based company has had trouble expanding and retaining its base of about 310 million monthly active users, making further changes necessary. This is a part of our overarching and ongoing strategy to refine our iconic product, Chief Marketing Officer Leslie Berland said.Last week, Bloomberg reported that links will also soon stop counting against the character limit, according to people familiar with the matter. We are always and will continue to look for ways to refine the experience, Berland said, declining to comment specifically.Twitter shares reached an intraday record low Tuesday after Michael Nathanson, an analyst at MoffettNathanson, said the company is less likely to be a takeout candidate, given declining interest from users and advertisers. He downgraded the company to "sell," saying it has yet to see "meaningful payoff" from initiatives to draw in new users.
Google's offices in Paris are reportedly being raided by French investigators as part of a tax probeInvestigators in France have raided Google's Paris headquarters amid a probe over the company's tax payments, Reuters reported on 24 May.The raid is part of an investigation into "aggravated tax fraud" and money laundering, authorities said. The raid is the latest regulatory headache for the American search engine-and-email company, which like other Silicon Valley firms faces increasing questions about its complex tax arrangements.According to a report in French daily, Le Parisien, at least 100 investigators are part of the raid at Google's offices.Police sources have confirmed that the raid is taking place and source close to the finance ministry said the raid at Google's offices has been ongoing since 5am local time 3am GMT .At the time, the UK Public Accounts Committee referred to the settlement as "disproportionately small".
But four billion years ago, extreme space weather was probably the norm.Baby suns, it turns out, are extremely eruptive, releasing mind-boggling amounts of energy during solar superflares that make our wildest space weather look like drizzle. The research began several years back, when Airapetian was studying the magnetic activity of stars in NASA s Kepler database. So now you have these particles interacting with molecules in the atmosphere and creating new molecules—like a chain reaction, Airapetian said.Artist s concept depicting energetic particles from solar superflares raining down on the early Earth.Image via Vladimir AirapetianThese solar-atmospheric interactions produce nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas with 300 times the global warming potential of CO2.

BMW has released a concept vehicle that hearkens back to its legendary 02 series, which turns 50 this year. The 02 series is a particularly important one for BMW.Produced from 1966 through 1977, it assured the Bavarian carmaker's success after years of struggle following the Second World War, and introduced many of the styling cues which still appear on every BMW today. The most beloved of these — and certainly one of the most popular BMW cars in history — is the 2002 Turbo. The concept car, restyled in a nod to the 2002 Turbo, is called the 2002 Hommage.BMW released renderings of the new concept to mark the 50th anniversary of the 02 series, and the car is almost certainly not intended for a production run.Still, like many concept cars it can give hints at the styling motifs for the next generation of BMWs.View As: One PageSlides
GIFThe history of why Q is almost always followed by U is fascinating, and dates back to when the Normans invaded England in 1066.Before that, English didn t even have a Q; it used cw to replicate the sound. After the invasion, though, the spelling of English was changed to match the French ways: cw was replaced with qu.Not exactly, because they got that spelling from the Romans ... who actually got it from the Etruscans, who actually got it from the Phoenicians.Following the trail of language is always so much fun in a brain-tickling way.Watch Arika Okrent explain the history of Q and U in the video below.

Most founders earn significantly less than if they had a regular job Spotify founder wrote in April, a much-publicized open letter with a number of important prerequisites for being able to stay and develop their businesses in Sweden. The letter created attention and many in the media and social media thought that wealthy entrepreneurs should not speak. If Spotify would move abroad because of what the founders publicly recognized as major problems: lack of housing, lack of talent and lack of sensible options; it sends a clear signal to both Swedish startups, domestic and foreign investors as well as foreign talent that currently comes to Sweden to work in our amazing startups sector: Small businesses can not grow up to be big in Sweden. We are generally poor as church rats and very many who work in the sector to create awareness, raise questions, make the lobbying of politicians, be mentors or support startup entrepreneurs, do it for free.

Project Ara, Google s modular smartphone concept, is slowly but surely inching its way closer to becoming a consumer product. On Friday, project lead Rafa Camargo revealed a huge milestone in that developer kits will be shipping later this year.Best yet, a consumer version will be available sometime in 2017.The revelation came as part of an exclusive interview with Wired. In it, we learn that the developer edition shipping later this year will feature a 5.3-inch display and is described as a fairly high-end handset. The Project Ara team decided to handle this aspect of the device with software as it prevents mechanical accidents or failure.
But Google just made a big promise that developers will be be getting their hands on a device this fall with a consumer version due in 2017.Although Project Ara has been on Google s mind for years now, it s been hampered by hardware delays. After a year, Project Ara didn t have much to show for all its talk of the future, but it certainly inspired the smartphone old guard to run with the idea. But where those attempts are the cozy consumer version of what a modular smartphone can be, Project Ara is the rugged frontier: a patchwork of hardware with a number of different modules that anyone can decide how to mix and match.A Wired exclusive on the reasons why it took Google so damn long was that the half-dozen modular connectors really needed to not suck.Ara chief Richard Woolridge spits out crazy edit-video-while-you-computer-vision use cases, but says the spec boils down to this: It can handle anything.

Future phones available starting this fall will be considered Daydream-ready if they meet certain requirements: a high-power SoC that can provide a quality experience at 60 frames per second, a low-persistence display read: OLED only , low-latency, and high-quality sensors are all required for certification. It s not 90 frames per secondMany people have argued that VR displays have to update at a minimum of 90 frames per second in order to minimize motion sickness. And you can forget about it working on iPhone, like Cardboard does.So if you get a call or a text, it s rendered into the VR world and you can respond. But wouldn t it be cool if you could converse with the Google Assistant in VR?Expect Cardboard to stick around for at least a couple more years.
