The art of helmet painting in the UK

To most of you, a helmet is just the thing that protects your head. Many bike riders find it uncomfortable and unsatisfied to wear a helmet due to its ugly appearance. If it had an artistic look, people will be more open to wearing it. Manufacturers focus more on the quality and sturdiness of the helmet, rather than if it looks stylish.

Things have started changing in recent past. The cottage industry of artisans uses helmets as the raw material. They create work of fine art which doubles as safety equipment. It is a universal fact that the buyer attracts to-

  • Eye-catching designs
  • Attractive colours

In today’s market, helmets appealing to millennials are not available that easily. There are few bike riders who paint their helmets based on their creativity and preference. The current generation not only wants a helmet to be robust but should have a personalized touch as well. They want to express themselves via the design of their helmets. Things to be considered before you paint your helmet-

  • Choose the right helmet

It is necessary to choose a helmet which is certified by Snell, DOT or ECE standards. This ensures your safety. The helmet should also:

  • Has a right fit
  • Based on your head shape and size

A helmet is made from many different materials like carbon fibre, fibreglass, thermoplastic, etc. Consider the material that your chosen helmet is made of.

  • Dismantle the helmet

Before painting, consider dismantling the things that are removable and will not be painted. This includes screws, lens, accessories, padding, etc. Remove them carefully so that these parts do not get painted. Few parts might not get dismantled, cover them by a sticking-plaster.

Methods to paint a helmet-

  • Airbrush painting

Gather all the tools and materials required which includes- airbrush gun or paint spray, a raincoat which helps to prevent paint from splashing over your clothes, a sticking-plaster, old big newspaper, markers and paintbrushes and flexible stencils.

  • Visualize the helmet and determine which part you want to paint or you don’t want to paint.
  • To make the paint to stick to the surface of a helmet is to polish the outer shell or some parts with the use of sandpaper.
  • Cover the area by sticking-plaster which you don’t want to paint.
  • Spread out the big newspaper on the ground and place a helmet on it.
  • Spray the helmet by using airbrush gun or paint spray. Wait for some time until the paint is dry. Use markers to draw the frame.
  • With the help of paintbrushes and water paint, paint a helmet on the frame you have sketched. This is considered the most difficult step as it requires caution and drawing skill.
  • Spray transparent paint to make the surface of helmet smooth and shiny.

These above steps give you airbrushed crash helmet which is usually done by a professional.

  • Paintbrush painting

For this, you require acrylic paint, a paintbrush, a pencil and a marker. It is a way to show off your creativity in the highest notch. Paint a required part of helmet’s surface instead of the overall surface. Use a paintbrush to paint the areas you want to with the help of any colour.

  • Draw the frame with the use of a pencil to be painted.
  • Colour the frame with many layers in order to cover the paint. Colour the new layer once the old layer gets dry.
  • Use the marker to redraw the frame.
