How to Update Alexa Settings for More Privacy

While smart speakers are convenient and fun to use, they come with certain privacy and security issues. If you have an Amazon Echo device, then you might be getting concerned about your privacy. Well, here are the settings you can update to improve your privacy when using Amazon Echo.

Amazon Alexa Privacy Settings You Need To Enable

Launch the Alexa application. After opening the Alexa app, go to Settings, tap on Alexa account and Alexa privacy. The privacy section lets you go through the voice history, smart alert history, smart home device history, Alexa skill permissions and how your information is used by Amazon Alexa.

  • Review the voice history

In the Privacy screen of the Alexa app, tap on Review voice history.

Select the Review voice history option from the menu. This will allow you to go through your voice history record. You can select if you want to see the voice history of the present day, a day before, the present week, the present month, entire history, or custom.

Tap on Custom, and you will be able to choose a specific time range. After selecting the timeframe, you will be able to see a listing of all the voice commands. Tap on any one to play it. You can also delete them. If you wish to delete all the recordings then select All history and then tap on delete all recordings for all history.

  • Review the alert history

Tap on the Review smart alert history option from the Amazon Alexa privacy window.

Alerts mean the activity you have permitted Alexa to detect. It constitutes of things such as the sound of the smoke alarm, glass break, etc. You can review your alert history by date or timeframe, and remove it either one by one or simultaneously.

  • Review the smart home device history.

You can easily manage your smart home devices history on Alexa app. Amazon Alexa collects data regarding the 3rd party smart devices that you pair to your Amazon Echo devices. It gathers information such as whether the smart bulb is switched on or off or what temperature you prefer for the connected smart thermostat.

You can easily delete the smart home devices history with a single tap.

  • Manage skill permissions

You can easily manage the skill permissions. Tap on Manage skill permissions, and you will be able to see skills that have requested permissions to. You may notice that you have shared more information without even knowing it. These permissions are for accessing the device street address, device country and postal code, viewing and modifying Alexa lists, using Amazon Pay, accessing full name, first name, mobile number, etc. If you want to remove certain permissions, then tap on it and turn it off.

  • Manage how your data is used by Alexa

To check which way Alexa has been using your data, tap on Manage how your data improves Alexa. Now, you will be able to see how your voice recordings are used, etc. You can turn it off. Amazon also makes use of the messages sent through Alexa for improving the accuracy of the transcription. You can disable this as well.
