The Pathetic Condition Of Medical Facilities In India

Medical facilities in India have always been a matter of great concern in India. Technically it is in a pathetic condition and infrastructure is crumbling like matchsticks. If you count out the private medical facilities, the government-run hospitals and other medical amenities are in serious need of overhauling and change in administrative approach. The already overburdened medical centers of government are facing several types of issues such as lack of medical staff, high tech equipment, and other basic facilities that should be available in the hospital. The fault line in the medical machinery of the government hospitals is exposed even more with the recent events that took place in West Bengal and Bihar.

Both the states highlighted how bad are the medical facilities of our country and why there is a need to pay special attention to it. In West Bengal, there was an ugly spat between doctors and the patients, which resulted in the kin of patients attacking the doctors on duty.  The state of Bihar on the other side is whammed by the deadly viral disease called encephalitis which already has taken toll of many patients in the region, and several others are battling for their lives in the hospitals.

The attack on doctors that occurred in a government hospital of West Bengal triggered a nationwide stir among the doctors in the country, demanding better security for them along with several other demands. The doctors refused to work in unsafe conditions and quoted they will only resume work only after their demands were met. This led to the suspension of essential medical services as the doctors, including juniors and seniors, went on strike. The OPD and all major surgeries were postponed, and emergency services were not operational. This also became a tug of war on the political front as both doctors and state administration were not mellowing down to ease out the tension and resolve the situation. Due to this confrontation, many patients suffered the brunt of it, and some even paid a heavy price of the stir with their lives.

But these events raised some grave fundamental questions on the medical machinery of the government and the behavior of people too. As medical facilities are an essential service and it is connected with the life and health of people, should doctors be allowed to go on strike and add misery to the suffering of the people? Are the people themselves not responsible for the unruly behavior and responsible for the vandalism of public property and manhandling the doctors? Is the government not responsible for not spending adequately in upgrading the facilities of the government hospitals and appointing sufficient doctors and medical staff for the treatment of patients?

Many questions lie unanswered, and each party is at fault in their own way. Since not everyone is capable of affording treatment in private hospitals, most of the people opt for therapy at government hospitals where treatment is either free or cheaper than private hospitals.

But these incidents are showing that even after developing in many sectors, how sick is our basic medical facilities and how badly it lags much behind in the developmental race. Inadequate staff, lack of advanced machinery, and overflow of patients is mounting an immense pressure on the staff and infrastructure of these government hospitals. On the other, the general mannerism in both public and doctors at times goes missing, which contributes to the raging conflict between the hospital staff and the relatives of the patients. Developing and strengthening the medical infrastructure of the country is an urgent need of the hour, and it is essential that both medical staff and the general public have a constraint on their behavior. The central and state governments have to work tirelessly to strengthen the medical facilities all over the country otherwise, such kind of conflict might even erupt in the future and in a more devastating way.
