How to prevent your smartphone from getting heat damage this Summer!

As the temperature rises this summer, so does the risk of your smartphone overheating. Too much heat can cause your phone to temporarily stop working or even potentially shorten its lifespan.

To avoid having to seek cell phone repair, you should attempt to prevent your smartphone from getting heat damage.

Why Do Smartphones Overheat?

In a nutshell, moving parts generate heat. Electricity is moving within your smartphone and that is proportional to the amount of heat your smartphone produces.

Most of the action on your smartphone originates from the phone’s system-on-a-chip which is home to the central and graphics processing units.

Sometimes your phone can overheat thanks to demanding apps that place a burden on the CPU. Widgets, functions and features and connectivity functions like Bluetooth, wi-fi, and the like all necessitate processing power which warms the system-on-a-chip and require more electricity, which warms the battery.

Other times, your phone can overheat due to external circumstances, like leaving it in the sun, for example.

And unfortunately, when your phone frequently overheats, the heat can lead to device damage.

How Your Phone Can be Damaged from Overheating

Cell phones are powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. These batteries are extremely heat sensitive. Excess heat will speed up battery degradation and will eventually cause it to die.

Another component of your phone that can be damaged from overheating is your system-on-a-chip. If it is exposed to too much heat for a long amount of time, physical damage can occur.

How to Prevent Smartphones from Getting Heat Damage

How to Protect Your Battery

You don’t want to expose your battery to heat when it is fully charged, so you’ll want to avoid juicing up your phone to 100% charge. This will apply stress to your battery.

Additionally, you’ll want to avoid letting your charge drop down to zero percent. Keeping your phone charged from 30%-80% might be a pain, but it will prolong your battery life.

If you need to charge your phone for a long period or overnight, leave it on a cool, hard surface in lieu of a bed or piece of cushioned furniture which will trap heat.

How to Protect Your System-on-a-Chip

To prevent your system-on-a-chip from overheating, make sure that you don’t watch videos for too long, play power consuming games or multitask on apps that require a large amount of processing power. Avoid using Bluetooth for too long, and use wi-fi that is stable.

Avoid as many demanding processes as you can.

Remove Your Protective Case to Cool the Phone Down

A protective case or cover can trap heat inside, so if your phone needs to cool down, remove the case so your device can be exposed to the air.

Use a Power Saving App

You can look into apps that conserve resources and phone power. One app that comes recommended is Greenfiy, a free application that can extend battery life and help you prevent overheating issues on your smartphone.

Keep Your Phone Out of Direct Sunlight

It’s officially summer now, so try to avoid leaving your phone in direct sunlight in the heat.

Turn off Location Tracking

You can cool down your phone by disabling location tracking, and Bluetooth as well. If you don’t really need to use these features, leaving them on will eat up resources and warm up your phone.

Check Your Battery Usage

Take a look at your phone’s settings to see what app or process is consuming the most battery power. If it’s consuming a lot of battery, chances are it’s creating a lot of heat. Identify the apps and processes that are causing trouble, and disable or delete them.

Dim Your Phone

Turn the brightness settings to the lowest possible level, reducing the strain on your battery.

Don’t Leave Your Phone in the Car

Cars trap heat and cause the temperature to rise rapidly. Leaving your phone in the car for a long period of time, even if it is in the glove compartment, can cause damage to the LCD screen and the battery.

Don’t Keep Your Phone in Your Purse or Pocket for Too Long

As the heat rises, you’ll want to let your phone breathe every now and again. If you are carrying your phone around in your purse or pocket on the go, air circulation is blocked and the inner components will malfunction.

Take these tips to heart and you will do a good job of preventing your smartphone from getting heat damage these summer.
