If you are often angry, you may be depressed

When we think of depression, we often connect words such as sad and lonely to the condition but very rarely does anger cross our minds. Angry and depressed hardly ever go together. However, anger is an incredibly common symptom of depression, often masking itself in the form of short temperament, retorts, hurtful sarcasm, and more. Anger is quite an underrated emotion, often being taken at face value. As Sigmund Freud once said, ‘Depression is anger turned inward’, we shouldn’t take anger lightly, as it may be indicative of a larger issue that should be addressed.

The Relation between anger and depression

While spurts of anger can be characterized as a short temperament, and can often be healthy, what people should look out for is long term anger. People who often keep anger inside and suppress it, more likely to let it all out on a loved one, maybe suffering from depression. Constant irritability is another factor. Moreover, other symptoms of depression, such as lack of sleep, weight fluctuation, loss of energy, etc. can make a person quite irritated, taking the form of anger towards others, but most importantly, oneself.

Symptoms of anger in a depressed person

There are various ways in which you may be able to identify depression in yourself or someone around you, by studying their episodes of anger.
• Constant feelings of shame and self-blame for negative experiences
• The need to intimidate a person perceived as a threat
• Constant anger and irritability at the slightest of things
• Suppression of anger, later leading to angry outbursts
• Yelling, screaming, slamming doors, and breaking things when angry
• Constant frustration with themselves and the people around

How to treat depression

As the same reason for depression causes anger, it is harder to separate the two. As anger is caused by depression, treating the root problem helps suppress its results.

• Seeking help

Seeking help from a therapist or counselor is the best way to get through depression in a healthy manner. It helps work through issues right from the root, and get in touch with your emotions, allowing for actual healing to take place, rather than simply treating depression at the surface. In case you have severe depression, a doctor may also recommend medication to prevent further issues from surfacing.

• Taking up a hobby

Taking up a hobby such as painting or writing can give you something productive and fulfilling to do. This allows you to distract yourself from the negativity of depression and heal yourself. A hobby is a great treatment for depression.

• Speaking to your loved ones

It is wondrous what the support from the people you love can do. Simple talking to your friends and family about how you feel can make you feel much better, and that you’re not going through this alone.
