Dementia is a disease that involves a set of symptoms like memory loss, lack of thinking ability, and difficulty in problem-solving. These symptoms are slow-paced at the beginning of phase 1 of dementia. They pick up the pace gradually and affect the patient’s day to day life. Mood and behavioral changes are also symptoms often observed in a person suffering from dementia.

The most common cause of Dementia is Alzheimer’s disease which damages the brain and nerve cells. However, it’s not the only cause of dementia.

Causes of Dementia

  1. Alzheimer’s disease: Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. In such cases, the brain cells get attacked by abnormal protein structures that systematically surround the brain cells and prevent them from thriving and making connections.
  2. Vascular dementia: in Vascular dementia, the flow of oxygen in and to the brain gets disturbed due to a blockage in blood vessels. This causes brain cells to deteriorate and ultimately die.
  3. Lewy body formation: When abnormally small Lewy bodies get produced inside the brain and attack the brain cells, dementia occurs.

Dementia is seen in people who are usually 65 or above. According to a study, 1 in every 15 people in this age group has dementia.

Modern ways of treatment of dementia

Treatment of dementia is possible by both medicinal and non-medicinal means.

Let’s first check out how to treat dementia without the help of medicines:

  • Counseling is an extremely effective way to come to terms with the symptoms and live life happily even after one has been diagnosed with this disease. If a person has anxiety issues after getting diagnosed, then behavioral therapy sessions can help in the long run.
  • Cognitive rehabilitation helps the person to grasp the reality and seriousness of his condition and slowly come to terms with the disease. It can also help in getting the memory back and solving the brain's operational methods.
  • With the help of music and other art forms, people recover from dementia over a period of time. It is very important that the person who has Dementia symptoms will not be isolated and will contact with society as this helps slow degeneration and even helps recovery.

Now, let’s move to dementia treatment with the help of medicines:

Dementia treatment is possible with the help of modern drugs and medications. If a person is diagnosed with common dementia (with Alzheimer’s), then the drugs such as galantamine, donepezil, and rivastigmine are usually prescribed by the doctors. They function as temporary memory enhancers and confidence boosters.

The drugs, as mentioned above, also help in getting rid of those Lewy bodies inside the brain which attack the brain cells and cause them to die. Other kinds of medications include anxiety medication, depression medication, and sleep deprivation medications which help the person in coping with the usual side-effects of dementia.

Modern medical and research science is continuously working to find the best possible treatment for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
