Error 49 is one of the most popular error codes related to the device driver that mostly appears on Windows OS be it Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, or 10. The reason behind this error is primarily due to the overload of connected equipment to your computer. The complete error message may look like this: “Windows unable to start new hardware devices due to the system hive is too large (surpasses the Registry Size Limit). ( Error Code 49)” The error code 49 brings the removed devices on the system hive list. However, there are a few methods to get this error code resolved without much trouble. Let’s get started and resolve error code 49.
Solutions to Solve Error 49
Fix 1: Uninstalling Not In Use Equipments
The best way to free up the overloaded system hive is to remove the devices that are not in use. In this method, we are going to learn how to uninstall the devices which are not in use. See the instructions given below:
  1. Log in to the administrator account.
  2. Head to the Start menu.
  3. Right-click on the Computer option or icon.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. On the left, tap on Advanced system settings.
  6. Now press the Environment Variables button.
  7. In the User variables dialogue box, press the New button.
  8. Now copy and paste this in the Variable Name dialogue field: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices.
  9. Now close the current window.
  10. Once that completes, head to the Start Menu.
  11. Search for Device Manager.
  12. Right-click on the Device Manager icon.
  13. Choose Run as administrator.
  14. Once the Device Manager appears, press on View option.
  15. Now choose the option saying Show hidden devices.
  16. In the device tree, expand the option and find the faded icons.
  17. The faded devices are the devices that are not in use but installed in your device memory. To remove them right-click on each of them. 
  18. Choose the Uninstall option.

Fix 2: System Restore Points
System Restore Points are the best way to undo most of the current system errors and software related issues, including the error code 49. It restores your system to the time when the error wasn’t triggered. You have to choose the System restore point, which was made before the error came alive. See the instructions mentioned below to fix the 49 error code:
  1. Get the administrator login access. 
  2. Head to Start Menu by tapping the Start key on your keyboard.
  3. Search for System Restore.
  4. Select the System Restore icon from the results.
  5. Press on Restore my computer to an earlier time.
  6. Head to Next.
  7. Choose the recent Windows to restore point available in “On this list, click a restore point.”
  8. Once a restore point is chosen, press on Next.
  9. Now press the Next button.
  10. Reboot the device.
  11. See if the error 49 still persists.
Fix 3: Uninstalling and Reinstalling Device Driver
If the restoring system point didn’t work for you, then you might need to remove the current drivers and then install them manually once again to resolve the issue.
  1. In order to remove the existing device drivers, first of all, log in as the administrator.
  2. Open the Device Manager with admin privileges. 
  3. Choose the device that is triggering the error code 49.
  4. Now make sure the device is plugged in properly.
  5. Double click the device to open its driver window.
  6. Head to the Driver tab from the upper menu.
  7. Choose the Update Driver option.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  9. Once reinstallation completes, reboot the device to see effects.
