How to Plant Moss

Moss grows by spores and loves moist oil. Moss can be used to give the lawn a green look and will grow in the shade. It is excellent to cover the bare area of the garden. There are some tips for growing moss and making it a functional part of the year.

Moss comes in two primary forms. There is the pleurocarpous moss and the acrocarpous moss. The pleurocarpous moss grows low to the ground and will be able to be green in no time. It will spread out horizontally. The acrocarpous moss grows in clumps, and it will grow in height. Moss does not produce flowers, but they will grow small stalks so they can spread their spores for reproduction.

A person can get moss at their local plant nursery. If for some reason, the nursery does not have moss, a person can order it on the internet. Moss multiplies, so only a small amount is needed. A person can also get some moss in the wild. They will need to dig up some of the grow and the soil so they can keep it alive as they transfer it to their lawn.

When looking for a space to put the moss on their yard, a person should look for a place that has moisture and indirect sunlight. Moss is not too picky about the growing conditions, but some areas will be better than others. Moss likes moisture and shade. It makes an excellent ground cover and can be planted under the taller tree where the sun may have trouble reaching. Moss will help detain the soil if a person lives in an area with heavy rain. Moss does not have a full root system so that it can be planted over rocky soil.

Moss likes acidic soil. The soil should be soft and loose. If the moss is going to be planted on the flat surface, be sure the soil if flat. If there are divots in the ground, the moss will grow in them, and it will show. The area should be saturated with water. Once the soil is wet, take the moss and press it onto the damp ground. It should be pressed down so it will not move. Once the moss is planted, it is essential to make sure it gets plenty of water. A person should water it daily for the first three weeks. This will allow the moss to grow and will enable it to be held in place. A person should use a sprinkler head on the hose mist setting. Direct water pressure may damage the moss. If the moss gets too dark, it is getting too much water. After a month, a person does not have to water the moss daily, but they should make sure that it is moist.

Once the moss has begun to grow, it can be spread to other parts of the yard if needed. A person should divide the moss into ¼ inch pieces and can plant them in other areas. The moss can then be planted in soil. When planting the moss on the rocky surface, it is essential to use larger pieces. This will help make sure that the moss sticks to the areas and is ready to grow.

Moss is low maintenance. All a person has to do is make sure that the moss gets plenty of moisture. It is also be grown in the shade and soil that is acidic. Moss is easy to take care of; it able to cover the bare spots in the yard where no other plants can grow.
