Why You Need Attic Insulation?

It is cold outdoors, and your house is still cold, no matter how high you set your thermostat. Or it is hot outside, and as your air conditioner runs continuously, you can still feel the heat permeating down from the attic. Your utility bills are steadily rising, and you're starting to wonder if your drafty home needs more insulation.

Nearly half of the energy used in an average US home is for heating and cooling. Of this, 30%-40% of the energy is lost through an uninsulated attic or under-insulated one.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that attics be insulated with insulating materials such as fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board, and spray foam with a R-value of 60 to reduce this energy loss.

Even today, many homes are insulated using outdated R-value recommendations, with rigid foam, fiberglass or cellulose insulation installed with the top of the insulation level with the top of the joists.

In this case, homes with 2x6 joists in the attic may only have six inches of insulation (R-19) in the attic, not enough to entirely prevent heat loss during winter. Installing StarRFoam's range of continuous insulation products help you towards the path of building High-Performance homes and would bring the R-value to the EPA recommendations.

Adding insulation to the attic is not as expensive as it sounds, especially when completed with StarRFoam's Fan Fold, Flute Filler, Holey Board, StarRGard, StarRGard Plus or Tapered range of product.

The financial payback of this home investment is usually less than a few years and is measured by a reduction of heating and cooling costs. There is also an ecological payback involved from reducing your carbon footprint.
