Nearly everyone today has heard about dental implants and when they are needed. But for many people, it's less clear about the process of having one. Because Farber Center is known for providing the best dental implants Long Island has to offer, they are among those explaining more about the process. To begin, anyone interested in an implant needs to have an initial exam and consultation. X-rays and other diagnostic procedures will carefully examine the area where an implant would be placed.

One of the crucial deciding factors at the beginning is bone density. Because implants fuse to bone to become strong and stable, there must be enough in the prime spot. If not, bone grafting or augmentation may need to take place first. Once it has been established that there is sufficient bone, computer modeling, also known as computer-guided implant placement takes place. Your jaw will be recreated virtually, allowing the exact placement spot and angle to be determined.

On the day of your implant surgery, you'll be given an anesthetic to keep your comfortable, and if there is a failing tooth in the spot, it will be extracted first. The implant itself is titanium or ceramic screw that is placed into the jawbone. It will be placed during a minor surgery at the dentist's office. Once complete, in many cases, a temporary crown will be placed on top. When you go home, you'll eat softer foods or avoid chewing firmly on the implant spot while healing takes place.

During the healing process, which can take several months, your jawbone regrows around the implant to hold it firmly in place. One healing is complete, your dentist will place a permanent replacement tooth (crown) on top, and no one will know you have replaced a tooth.
