Important Factors to Consider When Flying With Your Dog

Whether you’re taking your pet along with you on vacation or relocating to another city/town, flying can be overwhelming for both pets and pet parents. But with a little planning and care, you can ensure your dog is safe while flying.

Consult Your Vet

Your pet should be healthy enough to fly. This is the first and most important factor. Make an appointment with your regular vet before departure so a proper medical checkup can be done on your dog. Usually, airlines ask for a health certificate within ten days of the travel date. If you are not able to show this document, your pet may not be allowed to board the plane.

Choose a Flight Without Stops

Always try your best to book a non-stop flight. Avoid vacationing during the holiday season because flights and airports are typically packed with travelers. If you are going to a warm destination, it is better to take a morning or evening flight. In case of cold climates, book a daytime flight.

Buy a Premium-Quality Crate

Many small breeds are allowed to travel in the passenger section, though you have to be able to fit your pet in a small crate. The crate should be placed under your seat. The dog should, however, have enough space to stand up and move around a bit. Again, if the crate does not fit under the seat, they’ll have to travel in the cargo hold.

In either case, the crate should be strong with sturdy handles. The bottom should be leak-proof and padded with a soft, absorbent material. The box should be properly ventilated. Carry a sign that shows “live animal” and have a sign on the crate that contains your name and contact details.

Try to check in late so the dog has to spend minimum waiting time in the cargo hold.

Never Administer Drugs

Giving sedatives to your pet is not only inhumane but it decreases the pup’s ability to handle heat at high altitudes. If your dog has anxiety issues, one of the best options is to give it dog CBD oil. Calming vests also help with keeping your canine friend at ease.

Conclusion

Once you reach the airport, you must have a photo of your dog with you. During the security check, remove his/her collar and carry them through the X-ray machine. Bring a bag of dog food so you can feed them treats if there are unpredicted delays. It’s good to play with your dog before leaving for the airport. If they are tired when at the airport, they will likely sleep throughout the journey. Food and water should be given in regulated amounts. Regulate how much your dog eats and drinks before the flight. Also, giving them a chew toy to play with during the flight is a good way to keep them engaged.
