Rappler rejects Keng’s plea to defend himself

Business tycoon Wilfredo Keng revealed in his press statement on Monday, June 15, that Rappler refused to check or publish his side of the story when he and his legal team tried to reach out to the media entity, Rappler and its head, Maria Ressa.

“It is of public record: My counsel had pleaded and begged with Rappler to correct their false public accusations that I am a criminal, or at the very least, to publish my side. They refused. They have denied me my right to clear my name,” he said.

According to Keng’s counsel, they even presented to Rappler all evidence pointing out his innocence regarding the accusations against him, such as certifications from Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), but was still rejected by Rappler to no avail.

“Thereafter our client presented to Rappler all the pertinent evidence including certifications from PDEA and NBI that he was never involved in any crime in the 37 years of doing business in the Philippines, so they can amend the article or add his side. But Rappler, unmindful of the damaging effect of their defamatory article, turned a blind eye and deaf ear,” they said.

Keng also mentioned that Ressa has never disputed the evidence, but has simply attempted to hide behind the fact that he cannot file a case again since the deadline for submitting the lawsuit has long passed.

Sa kabila ng kanilang kasinungalingan, hindi na ako maaring magreklamo dahil lumipas na ang panahon kung kailan ko dapat isampa ito (Despite their lies, I can no longer complain because the time has passed when I should have filed a case). Justly, this attempt has failed,” he noted.

The issue of this case stemmed due to Keng being linked to the late former chief justice Renato Corona, and his alleged use of vehicles from businessmen, and criminal involvement such as human trafficking and drug smuggling.

On the other hand, the businessman is now vindicated after the court verdict convicted Ressa and former researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos Jr., guilty of the cyber libel charges, even though the damage has been made to his life.

“Even today, when the truth should have set me free, Rappler’s lies still resound after the bang of the gavel has faded away,” he shared.
