With a release date in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been one of the most popular games developed and published by Nintendo in the racing genre. This eighth installment was created for the Wii U home video game console. Its classic gameplay of using characters from the Mario universe race in go-karts, sabotaging their opponents, using tools from item boxes to enhance performances received positive reviews from both gamers and critics.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Packs A Set of All-New Features

One other reason why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became popular was because of its features. The developers bought back 12-player racing and motorbikes from the 2008 version Mario Kart Wii. A few other editions formerly belonging to Mario Kart 7, such as underwater racing, kart customization, and hang gliders, were brought back to the expanded version of the 8th installment.

The makers went a step ahead and introduced anti-gravity racing, in which individual sections of the race track allowed the players to drive on ceilings and walls. New items- Piranha plant (attacks nearby racers and obstacles), the Crazy Eight (user gets eight items), etc. were also introduced to provide an exciting gameplay experience. It was a game with 32 tracks in eight cups (Leaf, Lightning, Special, Banana, Star, Flower, Shell, Mushroom).

Will New Features Downplay the Popularity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

However, one feature in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe downplayed the user experience, i.e., double item boxes. Initially introduced in Nintendo's Mario Kart: Double Dash, these additions were a plus for the 2003 edition. These double boxes gave players two randomly selected items to use during the game. To date, Double Dash is the only version in the Mario Kart series to feature cooperative gameplay. This type of gameplay allowed players on the same racing Kart to keep on exchanging items to tackle their enemies.

Single players also had the option of changing items themselves.

However, the makers decided to bring back the Double item boxes in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but without the unique technique of switching items back and forth. Another feature shelved about the double item boxes was the ability to save the items for later stages. It deprived the gamers of building their technique of navigating through the racing game.

A Cumbersome Process of Using Double Item Boxes

With the Double Item Boxes' missing features, gamers only had the option of using these using mystery boxes until they came across the items of their choice. This development proved to be a hindrance to people playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the first time in their lives. Multiple uses of the Double Item Boxes led to the racetracks being cluttered with numerous red/blue shells.

Mario Kart: A Decades-Old Go-kart Racing Game

Nintendo's Mario Kart is a popular series of go-kart racing games created as a spin-off to the Super Mario Series. The first game, Super Mario Kart, was released in 1992 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The development of the first version of this iconic game series was supervised by Shigeru Miyamoto, a Japanese game designer. Miyamoto was the creator of the original Super Mario Bros. Although, as the game progressed through the years and newer versions were released, gamers saw the introduction of brand-new modes, items, circuits, characters, and gameplay elements. The most famous gameplay modes were the Time trials, Grand Prix, and the VS Race.

There is a massive possibility that Nintendo releases Mario Kart 9 soon enough, but they will have to be careful about it. The primary reason is the fiasco of the Double item boxes in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition. They will have to reconsider and bring back the item switching feature, or if that's not possible, then entirely shelve the feature.
