What exactly is Design Thinking? 5 Points you should know about Designing your Work

Design is a term which has been used over the years to describe graphics, image, or a picture. I have often had a challenge while introducing myself to business professionals as to what do I do for a living. When I tell them that I am from the design space, the next question is what I do in design. If I say 'Logos’, pat comes the reply that they have an Advertising Agency for that task. If I say I design space, there is a quizzical look, “Space”, when I explain space, they say it is the job of an Interior Designer.

What exactly is Design Thinking?
Design Thinking is a much larger process that encompasses many more factors to create the correct business model and practices not only for the present but also for tomorrow. Design Thinking is the future way of doing business. Design Thinking is a process that every business organization should incorporate into its DNA for business growth and expansion.

1. Design Thinking is disruptive and active Leadership

It becomes necessary for any business owner to get out of their comfort zone to evolve their businesses constantly, starting from their products to their marketing and sales strategies to meet the challenges of a dynamic and changing marketplace.

2. Design Thinking is enquiring

Constantly taking feedbacks on competitive products, applying newer thoughts to improve products and services, thereby causing innovation whether in the processes or the products/services. Innovating the “go to market plans”, re-strategizing the marketing and sales.

3. Design Thinking is Opportunistic

A dynamic marketplace offers many opportunities for tweaking the products/ services, without entailing much Capex will put the business owner one step ahead of the competition and marketplace. Under normal conditions, we have found most of the businesses to be reactive rather than being proactive.

4. Design Thinking is Outcome Oriented

The Design Thinking Process is outcome-oriented. Either your product/service along with your strategies will be accepted and successful or it will be rejected. Accepting failure should not be a reason for discontentment or disillusion. Go back to the drawing board, understand the reasons for the failure, understand the expectations of the end-user, ask if your services have given a solution to the user.

5. Design Thinking is holistic

Design Thinking allows you to think BIG, even if you want to start small. It is always better to THINK BIG for the small step, for when your business grows you will be able to integrate systems and processes with ease rather than start all over again.

There are many more thinks that Business Owner has to incorporate into their Thinking which I shall be speaking in the future articles. So, business owners should first take the ownership of themselves and their businesses, rather than get themselves skewed into Return on Investment and Profitability from the word go.
