1) Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is the most common form of candle wax, as approximately 94% of candles purchased at a retail outlet are made from this material. Candle makers usually use this type of wax as it is relatively inexpensive when compared to the other types of candle making wax. Paraffin wax is often sold in 10 lb. or 11 lb. blocks which are not always of the same shape, size, color, or surface texture.

2) Beeswax

The second most popular type of candle making wax is beeswax. Beeswax candles are extremely easy to make and quite popular due to their natural aroma which resembles honey. In addition, beeswax candles last longer than paraffin wax candles, and can be purchased in blocks, sheets, beads or chunks. Many people choose to make beeswax candles as the beeswax sheets do not need to be melted, and can be rolled or molded into candles by hand, without the use of heat or electricity.

3) Soy Wax

Soy wax is one of the newer types of candle wax, and is 100% natural. It is made from a pure natural soybean base and contains no herbicides, pesticides, additives or preservatives. Candles made from soy wax burn cleaner than other types, burn more evenly, last longer, and have little carbon build up. Because of this they are generally thought to be less dangerous to pregnant mothers and people with allergies. In order to keep the candle 100% natural, soy wax candles are usually made with pure essential oil fragrances, rather than with synthetic scents. These candles are often used as aromatherapy candles.

4) Palm Wax

Soon after the development of soy wax, palm wax was created. Palm wax is one of the more expensive types of candle making wax, however some people are willing to pay more as this material burns with no soot and is easy to work with. When used alone for candle making, palm wax offers clear, stable colors, burns for a very long time, and is considered a high quality wax. Palm wax is often used in conjunction with other types of wax, as it is expensive but helps give other candles a more polished finish.

5) Gel Wax

Gel candles are made out of gel wax, which is essentially gelled mineral oils and plastic polymer. Due to its high flash point, it is not recommended for beginner use. These types of candles usually feel quite rubbery and are transparent or semitransparent, and often contain bubbles. Non-flammable objects can be placed inside for decorations, making these the most fun types of candles to create.

6) Bayberry wax

Bayberry wax is an uncommon wax made from berry shrubs. This expensive wax is made from the Northern Bayberry and Southern Bayberry and offers a beautiful natural aroma. Its soft green natural color is often used in conjunction with beeswax, which brings down the cost but doesn't compromise on quality.

Regardless of what type of wax you choose to use, make sure you choose the right one for your project. Doing your research now will save you time and money later.
