Difference between a licensed and registered general contractor

The general contractor is the top skilled one who can do any and all sort of work in a building project. Even though the project is big and complex, a general contractor can handle the pressure very well. However, the rules that a general building contractor has to follow are different from state to state or even at local zones. Even though the general contractor term is the same, there is a difference between a registered general building contractor and a certified general contractor.

A Licensed General Contractor

The license requirements for a general contractor is different for each state. Some states have a license passing exam that the contractor has to pass in order to get a license. Some states include a criminal background check also to ensure that the company and its finances are in good hands.

A Registered Contractor

Getting a license is different from registering with the government. There can be different requirements for completing the registration with the officials. One doesn’t need any kind of test, classes, or special training courses to register with the government. However, they have to ensure that the work is authentically started otherwise, fines and law procedures can take a lot of finances from the company.

A Certified Contractor

A certified contractor is the same as ‘licensed’. A contractor can certify with the government organization as well as a trading one too. The certification can also depend on the basis of affordable homes or office construction or energy-efficient built. Different specialist certificates enlarge the options available with the general building contractors to choose from.

One has to be very careful while hiring the contractors because there can be many options in the market and to choose the best one could become a task. Thus, those who want to hire a contractor make sure that they are licensed and registered. It is okay if they are not certified, but if they are it is your plus point. It is crucial to look at all the official documents or paperwork before you start dealing with the general building contractor. Take note of the presence of the general contractor’s registration number on the contract.
