Organ Transplant DNA Tests in India. What to know before going for it?

The history of DNA testing in India is around 30 years old. Before the commercial use of DNA tests started, it was merely limited to research institutes, pharmaceutical R&D facilities, and forensic labs, etc. Today, we, the common people have various DNA tests available for different purposes for ourselves. A DNA test finds its use in many fields. One of the most extensive applications of DNA testing includes Organ transplant DNA tests.

What are Organ Transplant DNA tests done for? Is it mandatory?

The government of India amended the previously enacted ‘Transplantation of Human Organs Act’ in 2014. This amendment enforced a DNA test for the organ recipient and the living donor. THOA, 2014 states that for someone to get an organ transplanted, he/she must prove his/her biological relationship to the living donor. An Organ transplant DNA test is the best way of doing so, and is also mandatory by law.

The need for this came, due to the increasing number of professional donors. Illegal organ markets and rackets were also booming due to the lack of stringent laws.

THOA has also made it mandatory for the surgeon (the operating doctor) and the hospital to get a DNA test for an organ transplant before the transplantation procedure is started. The DNA test must be submitted to the approval committee, which will approve or disapprove the transplantation, depending upon the test result. Only after the approval committee has approved the transplant, the donor is allowed to donate the organ, and the hospital and the surgeon are allowed to do the transplant.

What types of Organ Transplant DNA tests are available in India? What is the procedure of an Organ Transplant DNA test?

In India, generally, two types of Organ transplants are prevalent - kidney transplant and liver transplant. A patient who has suffered an organ failure needs immediate and critical medical care before he/she gets a new organ. Now the process of transplantation needs a few formalities, which are mandatory, of which a genetic test for relationship confirmation is the most important. When an organ is taken from a living donor, he/she must be a blood relative to the patient. An organ transplant DNA test is required to confirm the relationship.

The sampling and the testing are done from a NABL accredited laboratory. DNA samples of both - the recipient and the donor are taken for the test. Then the lab submits a Form-5 along with the DNA test report to the competent authority (the approval committee). If the genetic relationship is confirmed the organ transplant is approved, else disapproved.

DNA profiling tests for relationship confirmation are performed based on the claimed relationship between the donor and the recipient. These include-

  • Paternity DNA test
  • Maternity DNA test
  • Siblingship DNA test
  • Paternal side relative - YSTR analysis (DNA test)
  • Maternal side or Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) test
  • Kinship DNA test based on autosomal markers- For other relationships

Can I get an Organ Transplant DNA test near me from any DNA testing laboratory?

There are many private laboratories for DNA tests in India for the common public, but for an Organ Transplant DNA test, you must always go for a NABL certified laboratory. NABL or National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories is an independent organization that ensures the Standard Operating Procedures, quality, and authenticity of private diagnostic laboratories in India. NABL also ensures high precision of the Organ transplant DNA tests and highly reliable test results.

You must always choose a NABL accredited lab for Organ Transplant DNA tests in India, and a lab with a fast reporting facility.
