Rust in fuel systems is often brought on by bacteria, Cladosporium resinae, and pseudomonas aeruginosa, which stay in the water-fuel interface inside fuel tanks. These germs can get in the fuel system via infected fuel, standing water in sump bases, or perhaps with the tank vents.
