A Short Guide to Vision Tests

Vision tests are done by all kinds of people. Many people have eye problems right from their early years and some people can last an entire lifetime without a single eye problem. But with the rise of air pollution and infectious diseases, it is very important to go for regular vision tests at regular intervals.

The short guide is aimed to make people aware of the various vision tests and their importance. When you will visit an eye doctor, he or she will make you sit in front of an eye chart. The eye chart has many symbols of various shapes and sizes. Your objective is to observe how clearly you can see the various symbols and then repeat them to the eye doctor. In modern times, these charts have been digitized with ELITE vision chart dongle that can turn any monitor into a vision chart.

Typically there are three kinds of eye charts:

  • Snellen chart

This chart is named after Hermann Snellen, a Dutch eye doctor. This is the most commonly used eye chart and it starts with a big E.

  • Tumbling E

This is a specially designed eye chart for children who cannot read.

  • Landolt C

These charts are used to find the visual acuity of patients who are mute or illiterate.

The Auto Perimeter AP-100 is used in computers to conduct various eye tests without much hassle. The doctor can conduct a wide variety of eye tests within a small amount of time. Thus it helps the doctors to find out the eye problems rapidly.
