On Monday the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended a nationwide order through June 30, The moratorium was set to expire on Wednesday so to prevent millions of U.S. renters from being evicted amid the COVID-19 pandemic this step has been taken.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement, that the purpose of keeping people in their homes and out of crowded or homeless shelters and preventing evictions is a major step for preventing the spread of COVID-19.
In September during the administration of former President Donald Trump’s office, the order was issued. After President Joe Biden took office it was extended on Jan. 29 through the end of March.
As of January one in five U.S. renters was behind on rent noted the White House.
According to a survey by the U.S. Census Bureau conducted in March found that more than 4 million adults who are behind on rent fear the imminent risk of eviction said the CDC.
On top of $25 billion approved in December, another $21.5 billion of emergency rental assistance was approved by the U.S. Congress this month.
There have been court cases in regards to the moratorium, stating that the moratorium exceeded the authority given to the CDC by Congress, two federal judges have ruled against it. But have not issued an injunction blocking it.
The order is applicable to renters who do not earn more than $99,000 this year or $198,000 jointly, and those who did not earn any income in 2020 or received a stimulus check.
There is a need of filing sworn declarations by renters mentioning that the eviction would leave them homeless or force them into a “shared living setting” and also attest to proofs mentioning that they have done everything possible to get government assistance for rent or housing.
