A laminar flow hood has got various safety aspects to it that can help you to keep your laboratory clean. Most importantly it has the added advantage of ensuring that the samples of any substance that can be highly reactive or easily contaminated can be kept free from contamination at all times.

It is important because it prevents all types of contamination be it from the dust or suspended particles in the air or allowing the growth of microbial organisms such as harmful bacteria or viruses or even fungal growth.

Working principle of a laminar flow hood

There are two basic types of laminar flow hood and these are-

The horizontal airflow hood

The horizontal airflow hood has an HVAC filter and fan that allows fresh and purified air only to come into the chamber horizontally against the surface.

 The airflow within the chamber is kept at a constant facility. It is also to remember here that the air also leaves the chamber horizontally only.

The only problem is that as air flows horizontally the workbench or the chamber has to have more depth and breadth for the airflow to come in contact with the surface.

A larger workbench or fume hood thus means that you need a larger workstation which sometimes can be hard to install in small laboratory premises.

The vertical airflow hood

Within the vertical airflow hood, the airflow is at ninety degrees to the surface of the workbench or the fume hood. Any traces of harmful poisonous gases can be prevented as this would cause the exit of the gas from the horizontal fume outlet immediately.
