A great example of how libraries must evolve in order to meet today's informational needs is the rise of digital books. Thanks to modern printing processes and the Internet, digital books provide people with a variety of ways to learn, grow and have fun. However, some people still read books, but for one reason or another, cannot get their hands on the books they need because they live in a digital nation and cannot access a traditional book store. In order to stay afloat in this digital nation, libraries must adopt forward marketing strategies that emphasize cooperation with businesses and other entities that are experiencing increased interest in their products and services.

In today's world, it is often difficult for libraries to distinguish themselves from the thousands of competitors that are flooding the market. IT product and services providers are often identified by the service they provide and not the product they sell. Libraries must evolve a strategy that identifies how their services and programs fit into a business or corporation's overall goals and objectives. For example, if a library has a program for training its employees, its services and programs should not be seen as competing against employee development software and services. Information services and databases available through new technology trends will always require libraries to adapt, especially if the demand for their products is high but the resources to maintain those applications are low. The best scenario for libraries is to have an information services and databases department to handle growth, work as a partner with the new technologies, and expand its business strategies to accommodate growth. Implementing an information services strategy early can make it easier to deal with new product applications and services and can help to minimize the impact of their adoption on internal processes and budgets.
