Polyolefin resins are one of the many names used for rubber polyurethane. Resins are complex, lipid-soluble mixtures of various compounds. They are used for packaging for laminates and films, containers, cable insulation, coatings, toys, molds, linings, and pipes and tubes. Some polyolefin is used as an inexpensive alternative to VCT or VOC-based resins and plastics in packaging applications. Polyolefin is also used as additives to paints and finishes in a wide range of industries, including paper and building products, the automotive and trucking industries, and marine and chemical manufacturing. They are also used as additives to lubricants and fluids for fluid processing, as they are lipid solvents that eliminate scale in grease and oil.

Polyolefin additives are generally made from polyols, which are compounds of two carbon atoms linked together via chemical bonds. Polyolefin molecules have the ability to be shaped into many different shapes, depending on their molecular size.
