AA Meetings - Find Alcohol Anonymous Meetings Near You

While step twelve is the last of the twelve steps, it does not necessarily represent an end. In fact, for many AA members, this step is never actually completed. They will live this step every day for the rest of their lives, continually carrying the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to anyone who needs it.

Some members of AA Meeting Locator report having had a "bright light" experience at some point in their recovery. They say their Higher Power made himself known and that their life was therefore changed. Bill Wilson, AA founder, reported just such an experience.

More commonly though, members describe a more gradual spiritual awakening. By spending time learning to think of others first and rely on God's will, rather than their own will, they become more spiritual and less worldly.

The twelfth step of AA teaches members to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to other alcoholics. In this case "the message" is simple, but powerful. If you are an alcoholic, and are willing to follow some simple guidelines, you don't have to drink ever again.

For many "hopeless" alcoholics around the world this message is literally a lifeline that has the potential to save their lives, restore them to sanity, and allow them to be happy, joyous and free.

Living the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous is easy within the confines of a meeting room. The hard part is being true to them when we go out into the "real" world. That is exactly what AA would have its members do...practice these principles in all of their affairs.

Long time AA members feel that sobriety is not only the most significant and valuable gift they have ever received, but that it was given to them freely. They take a "pay it forward" attitude. The lucky alcoholics who came before them openly shared their experience, strength and hope. In turn, the AA member will share with newcomers. When those newcomers have some sobriety under their belts they will share with others who arrive after them. In this way, the program is perpetuated and available for any alcoholic who finds themselves in need.

After years of battling alcohol, Clay was lucky enough to find the strength to get sober. The transition to a sober lifestyle has not been easy, but the rewards have been well worth the struggle.
