There has been a significant amount of R&D spending on research to manufacturing more efficient and effective disposable insulin pens in the recent years

There is an increased demand for disposable insulin supplies as compared to the past years. The major driving forces behind this increased demand are; growing diabetic population (particularly the Type II diabetes population), the increasing geriatric population worldwide, the rising obesity population worldwide, and so on. Contrary to the past years, the current challenges of the industry growth are both the availability of different alternatives to standard insulin pens in the current market and their high cost.

As compared to the past years, there has been a significant amount of R&D spending on research to manufacturing more efficient and effective disposable insulin pens that provide a higher volume of daily dose. Thus, there are new designs for disposables that can be used either for a continuous supply of medication or single-dose application. These designs can be customized as per the requirement. Also, in terms of price, there has been an increase in both the volume share and the price/residual value offered by these products.

The most common and easily available type of disposable insulin pen is the standard-sized injection pump. A lot of them come with a built-in, auto-feeding mechanism that provides a continuous injection of the medication without requiring manual touch. They generally come with a leak-proof cap to ensure leak-free functioning. There is also a built-in auto shut-off function that ensures that the pen is not left on the desk during working hours and that no one else takes the lid while working. Most of them have a safety lock to prevent accidental release of the needle from the closing position.

With the launch of Sanofi-Aventis Diabetes Connect, there is now another option available for diabetics. This time, it has been developed especially for patients living in the United States of America. Themed like all the other Sanofi diabetes products are available for customization. In fact, patients in this category of people can get a choice between two different types of units: a disposable insulin pen that comes in a sleek design and is very convenient to carry around, or a prefilled insulin kit that comes with a digital control display and an insert that are specially manufactured and are fit perfectly into the pen. Either way, this is an option for patients who prefer to use only a single unit to satisfy their need for multiple doses of medication.
