Tips for Happy Children's Photography!

Photographing children is by far the best thing about photography for me, but also a real challenge. To be honest: you will never find it easy. You have to pay attention to so many things for a beautiful photo, and then also direct the children. How? Fortunately, over the years, I have discovered how you can do all that at the same time and enjoy yourself at the same time. As a result, children's photography is now one of my favorite jobs.

We would like to share some best children's photography tips with you. Bet that from now on you will also take fantastic photos of children and their families?

Shoot at eye level

As an adult you are easily twice the size of a child. Shooting while looking down on a child generally produces mediocre photos. So get down on your knees and step into their world. Or go crazy and lie on your stomach. Don't be afraid to get dirty because then you will miss the best moments.

Focus on the eyes

If you use a camera that allows you to focus, focus on the child's eyes. That's the first thing you look at in a photo, especially with children's photography. If the eyes are not sharp, it is immediately noticeable.

Mind the background

Before you start shooting, clean up all disturbing elements, change angles or find another spot. A blurred background often gives a nice effect. All attention then goes to the child. Zooming in also makes the background blurry. The more you zoom in, the more blur. There are all kinds of ways to make the background out of focus.

Choose a location with less distractions

Take photos in a place where your child is not too distracted by the environment. So it is better not to shoot on a field opposite the playground, because there is a good chance that they will be done with you after three minutes.

Fast shutter speed

Most kids never sit still, especially when you're taking pictures. That's not bad at all, because it often produces nice and dynamic photos. But those photos must of course be sharp. Therefore, set your SLR camera (if you have one) to a faster shutter speed, preferably 1/200s or even faster.

Light light light!

Learning to 'read' light is the most commonly heard tip for learning to photograph well. And that is not for nothing. Naturally present light makes your photos that much better. So try to shoot in nice, existing light.

If you do shoot in the middle of the day, be careful with bright sunlight and try to shoot in the shade. This way you prevent high contrasts and hard shadows on your photo. In addition, your models will not squint and that looks so nice.

Take pictures while they're at it

Let the children do something they enjoy. While they are busy, you can shoot at your leisure. Every now and then you can ask them something, for example what they are doing and if they want to take a look at you. But in general you take beautiful pictures while they are doing their own thing. This often works well, especially with younger children.

Stick a funny animal on your camera

Very young children find it difficult to keep looking at you. Their attention to you is usually very brief. Make sure they have something to look at: for example stick a stuffed animal or doll on the lens of your camera!

Enable high-speed mode

If you're taking pictures while kids are moving or enthusiastically telling a story, it's smart to set your SLR to high-speed mode. This way you can take a lot of photos in a short time. Many will fail, but if all goes well you will also have that moment of that great laugh. And in addition, you sometimes get a very nice series together.

Be patient!

Not all children like it when you want to photograph them. Some find it exciting and others really go for it. You cannot force children to have their picture taken. Would rather not have a child, start with a brother or sister. If they see how much fun it is, there's a good chance they'll want to join in anyway. Above all, have a lot of patience.
