Matterport example: virtual house tour using Insta360 One R

We are going to learn how to do a virtual real estate tour with this interesting camera, the Insta 360 One R using Matterport technology. The time has come for us to talk about Matterport, many have asked me to. This is a great time to tell you about Matterport (September 2020), because Insta 360 One R users are launching the new compatibility that will allow us to make a 3D virtual tour of houses with this interesting technology.

The time has come for us to talk about matterport photography, many have asked me to. This is a great time to tell you about Matterport (September 2020), because Insta 360 One R users are launching the new compatibility that will allow us to make a 3D virtual tour of houses with this interesting technology.

For those who have never heard, Matterport is a company that is talked about a lot in the real estate sector, because it allows you to have virtual tours of houses, apartments, for sale and rent, thanks to its Cortex artificial intelligence platform that converts 2D images into 3D.

Well, when we talk about Matterport, many will think of expensive 3D cameras, of $ 3,400, that have integrated infrared light sensors and that scan a space in 20 seconds, which added to the other scans of the same place, automatically generates a 3D environment, in which all the spaces are connected and that allows interacting with this interesting view, which gives an incredible spatial sensation of a place.

Create Matterport without using the Matterport camera

The interesting news is that today I am going to create a virtual tour without using the Matterport camera. I'm going to use the little Insta 360 One R camera, perhaps the most interesting 360 and action camera around these days.

Although I will talk in-depth about this camera in a later video, I will tell you quickly that this is a modular camera. A concept that in my opinion is incredible because it allows me to assemble the camera according to my needs and reuse elements that I have already bought.

Check this out: you can have a 360 camera using the dual-lens module, and then switch to 4K mode, with another module, using the same battery and the same processor. This is the version they sell under the name Twin Edition. As who says: two cameras in one.

But if you want to have even more professional video, with better sensitivity to noise, of higher resolution, you can buy the other module that comes with a one-inch sensor. This modular concept is fantastic… we'll have time to explore this tremendous toy in more depth later.

Today we will just focus on how to use it to put together our Matterport example and evaluate the result, so keep reading, until the end.

Before starting…

Install Matterport on your cell phone

At the time of writing this post, September 2020, I used the beta version of the Matterport app. If you're watching this video after October 2020, just install the official version of the Matterport app and you're done. But in case someone wants to do it like me, I'll explain quickly.

On your cell phone, go to the Matterport Betas page with all the instructions to follow, depending on the cell phone you have (iOS or Android).

In the case of iOS, you must install TestFlight first… and then Matterport Capture. Open the app and sign up to create a free account.

Once registered, log in with the username and password. The first time you load the application you will have to install the Cortex which is the technology that will allow you to convert 2D images into 3D, so it is super important that you download it and keep this download in the foreground until it is complete.

I suggest you enable access to the location, you will see that this will save you steps later when you create your 3D models. This is it for Matterport.
