How to Set Up a Security Camera on Your Property

Are you ready to join the millions of others who have set up security cameras on their property? One of the most common questions when it comes to how to set up a security camera is, “How difficult is it?” These cameras are super easy to set up as long as they are wireless, and that's what we're going to discuss today. If your heart is set on a wired system, you'll likely need the help of a professional to drill and run the lines to your new system. Wired cameras are much more invasive, time-consuming, and costly to install.

Choose your Camera:

  • If you are using the camera outside, make sure it's an outdoor camera.
  • Look for the features that are important to you. For example, does the camera work with Alexa?
  • Consider your budget before you being to shop and stick with it.
  • Determine how many cameras you need. Are you just placing them outside? Or will you have some inside the home?

Walk Around Your Property:

As you walk around the property, locate your outdoor outlets so you'll have somewhere to plug the cameras. Look around the upper portion of your house, at least 9 feet above the ground, to find areas to hang the cameras. You want to choose a location where you can capture the largest view of the front of the property. Choose a spot that lets you take in walkways, the driveway, and the street in front of your home. Depending on the size of your home, you may need two or even three cameras for the front. You could also look at the 360 outdoor security camera. This camera pans around to give you views of the complete area. The 360 outdoor camera is portable, so you can move it from one area to another easily.

The Backyard:

The backyard of your home is likely darker than the front. Don't ignore the back of your home as it's a potential point of entry for criminals. Consider a floodlight security camera for the backyard. The area would likely benefit from some light. Place your camera so that it covers as much of the yard as possible. Make it a point to concentrate on the darkest spots that make excellent hiding spots.

The Garage:

If the cameras in front of the house don't give you a view of your garage, add a camera to the front of the garage to capture any activity in that area. The garage can help criminals gain access to your home.

Indoors:

You can place indoor cameras on a shelf, desk, table, or any flat surface. Tuck them away out of sight or leave them out in the open; the choice is yours. It's important to allow your cameras an unobstructed view of the doors and windows on the first floor of the home. You may also want a camera for a child's bedroom; it’s nice to be able to check as your little one sleeps. You can also drop in through the camera to talk to your little one whenever you want.

Download the App:

Before you begin using your camera, download the app so you can view your camera and operate the various features. The app lets you change your view, use two-way communication, and in some cases, move the camera up and down.

Now that you know how to set up a security camera on your property, you're ready to start shopping. Getting security cameras is one of the wisest things you can do to protect your property.
