  • - From September 14, 2019, regulation for strong consumer authentication and increased security for payments was implemented. For online payment, strong customer authentication rules were implemented that incorporates a two-step authentication. Customers can identity themselves with a password, PIN, Bank ID, or biometric, followed by a one-time password that is sent to their mobile phone. For contactless in-store payment, the value of individual contactless payment made must not exceed ?50 ($57.28). The combined value of the total contactless transactions made since the last time strong authentication was performed (e.g. by inputting the card PIN) must not exceed ?150 ($171.83). Further, a maximum of five contactless transactions can be made without a PIN. Post that, the user need to authenticate the payment with a PIN.
  • - To benefit from the growing preference for alternative payments, banks and payment service providers are launching new payment services. In November 2018, Google launched its mobile payment solution, Google Pay, in Sweden. The solution allows users to make in-store, online, and in-app payments. In November 2017, Klarna partnered with Nordic-based PSP Nets to provide its customers with a pay-later solution in physical stores throughout the Nordic region - previously Klarna was only available for online purchases. In the same year, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay were also launched in the country.
  • - The merchant acquiring business saw a series of mergers and acquisitions during the review period. For instance, Elavon acquired Swedish payment processing company, Payius, in October 2019. Since 2013, Payius was offering merchant acquiring services exclusively to Elavon in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Similarly, Swedbank acquired PayEx, a Swedish payment service provider operating in the Nordic region, in May 2017. Following which in November 2017, Ingenico acquired a payment service provider, Bambora, to offer acquiring solutions.
