5 Characteristics of a Good VR Headset

As virtual reality technology continues to evolve it's becoming possible for consumers to use VR headsets in their day-to-day lives. In 2015, Facebook purchased Oculus Rift for a whopping $2 billion and released the commercial version of their headset in March 2016, with Samsung following close behind with their Gear VR headsets. Virtual reality isn't going anywhere any time soon which means there's plenty of opportunities for businesses to develop novel applications or even whole new worlds that will be accessed by customers using a VR headset.

However, not all headsets are created equal and it can be difficult for a business owner to choose the right one when faced with hundreds of options from companies large and small. Here are 5 things that make a good virtual reality headset:

1. Ease of access to content

As VR technology continues to evolve, so too will the ways in which customers interact with these headsets. For example, it's likely that future models will incorporate technologies like gesture control and retina tracking while still others may bring back stylus pens for an even more immersive experience. It's important that the headset allows customers easy access to your virtual world via touchpad controls or motion sensing.

2. Field of view

It goes without saying that almost all virtual reality headsets on the market today show users a wide field of view (FOV) by allowing them to look around their new surroundings in 360° vision. This type of functionality is necessary considering most non-VR games only allow users to look in one direction at a time. A wider FOV would allow users to experience virtual reality content on an entirely new level, giving them the feeling of total immersion into the game or world they're exploring.

3. High-resolution graphics

As with many things, quality is often sacrificed for cost-effectiveness especially when it comes to mass-produced items like VR headsets which are marketed more towards consumers than business use cases. However, this doesn't mean that all commercial grade headsets have ratcheted down their resolution capabilities; some companies offer products that boast high-resolution screens capable of rendering crisp images that can be seen clearly from any angle. This feature will become necessary as the industry matures and companies increase focus on augmented reality (AR) content that may require even higher resolutions than standard VR products.

4. Low latency / high responsiveness

The technology used within virtual reality headsets is still under development so it's no surprise that there are still certain kinks to iron out before the experience can be considered perfect for everyone using the product. Latency and responsiveness issues result in users experiencing motion sickness due to delays between head movement and screen updates, leading to discomfort during use of the headset which will lead customers to stop using it after only a few minutes. To ensure your customers won't suffer these side effects it's important that you choose a headset with low latency rates; anything over 30ms would be considered too long by most experts.

5. Comfortability

As with any new technology, there will be a learning curve for users who want to adapt to the new experience. There's no telling how long it could take before consumers are completely used to VR headsets and spending hours glued in front of their screens (my guess is somewhere between "never" and "three months"). For Thanksthis reason, it's important that your headset doesn't put any unnecessary pressure! on the head or face. A headset with good weight distribution, adjustable straps, and soft materials would help minimize discomfort over extended use.

Many more factors can determine whether a virtual reality headset is considered a good one by businesses but these 5 points should serve as a good starting point for those looking to dip their toes into virtual reality. This new industry is still relatively n it but as time goes on there will be more products with better immersion which will attract change an increasing number of consumers. Until then, businesses should do their due diligence before committing to a virtual reality headset that can help them make the most informed choice maye possible.
