Five Tips for Buying New AC Unit

The air conditioner is an important investment, especially to tackle the hot and humid climates of summer. But did you know buying a new AC unit in the summer season can prove a costly affair? Along with an inflated price tag, the technicians may end up charging more than expected on the installation process, too, due to their tightly packed schedule.

This is one of the reasons why people consider air conditioner replacement in Ottawa during the offseason, such as monsoon or winter. But, while you purchase your new AC during the offseason, it is important to keep a few tips in mind, such as:

1- Consider the cost

One can easily come across basic, affordable models in the market. But, there are ones that can require significant investment from your end. So, when you are considering the prices, it is best to strike a balance between the price your budget can accommodate and key features.

Investing in certain energy-saving features can help in offsetting initial costs by lowering the bills down the line.

2- Check the efficiency

You can come across various efficiency measurements on the AC units. EER or energy efficiency rating measures the unit’s energy efficiency. It is the measurement of the cooling rate at 95 degrees Fahrenheit divided by the amount of energy used and is usually given in BTU/Wh.

The SEER rating or seasonal energy efficiency ratio evaluates the energy efficiency for seasonal fluctuations. It is a measurement of heat eliminated during the standard cooling season divided by the energy in a similar season. Even SEER is given in BTU/Wh. Central AC units in the US have SEER or 13, but the U.S. Department of Energy suggests a SEER of 14. For window units, it suggests a SEER of at least 10.

3- Check the features

  • When it comes to features, it is best to buy AC units with:
  • Energy-saving modes for reduced energy consumption and lowered energy bills
  • Performance data such as “check filter” light
  • Convenience features like sleep modes, timer, etc.
  • Programmable thermostat to customize your AC use as per your schedule

4- Consider the home size

The size of your home will help you determine the optimal AC unit size. Window units are best for small rooms as they take up the exterior space.

If you have larger available space, then opt for a bulkier model. If you wish to cool multiple rooms, ductless systems or central AC can prove best.

5- Consider extra labour

Lastly, consider the extra labour charge when purchasing a new AC unit. Every unit has a different type of maintenance required.

Figuring out which option of maintenance suits you best will help you narrow down your AC options.

Over to you

Replacing the AC unit is a huge decision. The process can prove an expensive affair. However, picking the wrong AC unit is what will cost you more. So, use the tips suggested above for seamless air conditioner replacement.
