Greek Beaches: an instruction manual

Beaches in Greece

All over the world Greece is known as a country with a huge variety of beaches. Some are many kilometers long, covered with sand. Others have a pebble. Especially loved by tourists enjoy secluded small bays. Many Greek beaches occupy places of honor in world rankings. Among the most popular are Navagio on Zakynthos, Elafonisi of Crete, Myrtos on Kefalonia, Egremni and Porto Katsiki on Lefkada, as well as the colorful beaches of Santorini, resembling lunar landscapes. On the mainland, the best beaches are concentrated in Halkidiki. Also Halkidiki car rental is very good choice.

Prices for umbrellas and sun loungers

Season and "promotion" of the beach - here are two factors that affect the cost of sun loungers and umbrellas in Greece. So, in the fall, the price is often reduced. The price for a day can be 5 euros (for two) or up to 7-8 euros. On some beaches you can buy a drink, and the sun lounger is already included in its cost.

Greek beaches with Blue Flag

There are now about 400 beaches in Greece marked with the Blue Flag. The country annually ranks in the top three for cleanliness of beaches. The country's coastline meets the basic criteria for a high award: water quality, safety, care for the environment. Most of the blue flags were received by the beaches of Halkidiki, followed by the islands of Dodecanese and Crete (especially Lassithi). Lefkada and Kefalonia are the other two islands with the cleanest coastline. Among the award winners are the beaches of Sani, Porto Katsiki and Nea Potidea.

Rules of the beach

During the holidays you should not forget about the beach etiquette - no one canceled it. In Greece, there are a number of unspoken or fixed rules of conduct on the coast. It is not desirable to appear in stores in a swimsuit - it is regarded as bad taste. Also do not walk barefoot outside the beach. As for nudism, the European tourists undress wherever they want. But for such tourists in the country have special beaches.

To smoking on the coast are calm, because most of the locals - inveterate smokers. Therefore, do not get into a skirmish over the smoke. It is better to move farther away. But about permissiveness is out of the question: it is forbidden to leave cigarette butts on the sand.

A rare tourist takes pets with him on vacation. But if you do not leave your dog with someone, visiting the beaches with pets is allowed - there is no law that would prohibit it. The rules of stay are very simple: do not bother others and allow the dog to swim only away from the main mass of holidaymakers.

Natural dangers on Greek beaches

The main natural danger on the coast of Greece is what tourists come here for. Namely, the sun. Before going to the beach in Greece be sure to take care of protecting your skin. In the first few days, it is better to choose products with a protective factor of at least 30. Then you can switch to SPF-15. To tan was not only safe, but also beautiful and smooth, every tourist's arsenal must be a moisturizer for applying after the beach. You don't need to take the creams with you. Greek stores sell many sunscreen sprays of local brands with olive oil and herbs in the composition.

Another danger is sea urchins, which can lurk anywhere. They are mainly found on the rocky bottom and near all rocky surfaces. The consequences of such an encounter can ruin your vacation. So it's better to swim where the bottom is sandy and the water is clear. Only vigilance can prevent the danger: hedgehogs are easy to spot on the bottom. If the incident still happened, the first thing to do is to treat the injured part of the body with olive oil, as locals do. And then get immediate medical attention.

Jellyfish are rare in the Greek seas. In order not to suffer from them, it is advisable not to swim after the storm. If you get a burn from the tentacles, the place is smeared with alcohol or vinegar. Among the fish are also unpleasant sea creatures. Some of them are poisonous, so their bites or pricks should not be taken lightly.

Bathing Season

In most regions, the sea is already well warmed up by late May. Somewhere it starts earlier (Crete, Rhodes), somewhere the water can be cool even in early June (Halkidiki). The sea warms up to +28 during the peak season. You can swim comfortably until autumn, so the velvet season is the best period for those who can't stand the heat. In the fall, a longer season is again in Crete and Rhodes, where you can swim until October.

The beaches of Greece will not leave indifferent even those who do not refer themselves to fans of sunbathing. If you follow some simple rules, the vacation will leave only positive impressions.
