Who is a Nephrologist?

A nephrologist is a kidney specialist that treats kidney and urinary tract issues and diseases. They are experts in renal health. A nephrologist's job can be challenging, but it is rewarding to help someone feel better and get their life back.

Nephrologists generally work in a hospital and spend most of their time in a lab or office. They work closely with other specialists, such as cardiologists, dieticians, and urologists. They will examine a patient and study their medical records before diagnosing. They give patients advice and instructions on living a healthy life and following a treatment plan.

What They Do

Kidney specialists or nephrologists may perform diagnostic procedures such as blood and urine tests, ultrasound, and kidney biopsies.

Some of the conditions treated by nephrologists include protein or blood in urine, kidney infections, kidney cancer, kidney stones, chronic kidney diseases, renal artery stenosis, kidney failure, polycystic kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, and kidney swelling due to interstitial nephritis or glomerulonephritis.

A nephrologist is also involved in cases wherein other factors result in kidney dysfunction or kidney diseases. The other factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune conditions like lupus, heart diseases and certain medications.

Some treatments recommended by nephrologists for various kidney diseases may include diet and exercise, medications, and transplants.

A nephrologist will give a healthy life to patients with accurate diagnosis following regular physical exams, blood testing, fluid testing, lab testing and urine testing and a proper treatment plan.

Conclusion

Nephrologists generally work individually or as a part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors to care for patients referred through family physicians or other specialists. Several nephrologists consult cases in a clinic or hospital. Some of them may even take up the task of overseeing dialysis units. A few others may work as professors, while others may concentrate on clinical research.
