The Best Time to Brush Your Dog’s Hair Coat

Here are the recommended schedules for brushing your dogs:

Before and after bathing

To remove hair mats and tangles, brushing before bathing will be helpful. This also prepares their hair for bathing by making it smoother. This makes bathing more effective since the dirt could easily get washed out. The soap and shampoo could also penetrate their skin easily, resulting in cleaner and healthier skin.

After bathing and while you blow-dry their hair, gently brush their hair again. This removes the loosened hair and would help prevent matting when your dog's coat dries.

After Getting Wet

Anytime that a dog gets wet by swimming, playing in the rain, or running on the grass, you need to brush them after to prevent mats. Brushing helps their hair smoothen out as it dries, so it doesn’t get tangled and later form hair mats. Use a towel to remove excess water and then blow-dry after. When you’re done, brush them again when their hair is completely dry.

During Shedding Season

For some dogs, there are specific times of the year that they shed. Most of them are those with double coats. Their undercoat would undergo cycles of shedding. This is to prepare the dogs from summer to winter transitions and vice versa. The recommended frequency of brushing during this time is daily. You may devote at least 15 minutes per day to assist their shedding. This helps to remove loose hair, preventing them from forming mats and falling off on your furniture or floor.

Any problem affecting your pet's skin and/or hair coat should require a visit to your veterinary center Carolina Forest, SC.
