Cold Weather Safety Tips For Pets

Below are some suggestions you can try doing so that your pets are kept safe, healthy, and happy during the winter months:

Limit their exposure to sub-zero temperatures:

If the weather outdoors becomes too cold even for you, then it is also too cold possibly for your animal companion. Be aware of how long your pet stays outdoors. Hypothermia and frostbite could still result from being exposed to sub-zero temperatures even for just a short while. If you have a small dog or your dog has thin fur, put a doggie sweater or coat on him if you need to go outdoors. Pet booties could also warm your pet’s feed and keep them dry as well.

Keep outdoor walks brisk and potty breaks supervised

If you have to let your pet go outdoors for potty time, you will ideally want to be by your door. Call your pet back inside as soon as he is done. Being by your doorway as your pet is about to come inside could reduce the possibility of being distracted by some other thing in your home, resulting in accidentally leaving your pet outdoors for an extended time. It will also be a good idea to limit how much time you spend walking your pet when the weather is cold so that too much exposure to extremely cold temperatures is avoided. Walks should only take however much pet potty time is needed.

If your pet is showing signs of hypothermia, contact your veterinary clinic Covington, GA immediately.
