Foldable Displays - Technology of Future

Introduction

Technological advancement and tough competition in the technology market led companies to innovate unique and useful ideas, which not only eases human efforts but also be unique to grab the attention of the buyers. One such technology is the foldable display. Although we all have an idea about this technology and many of us have seen it in some kind of device, but those who haven’t any idea about it, let me tell you about it.

As we commonly see devices at our home and office, their display can’t be bend, if somehow you bend it, it will get broken. But foldable displays are made of materials, such as Polimide (PI) film, which made it possible to bend the screen of the device up to 180° without damaging it. Samsung’s mobile phone, Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one such common device with the feature of a foldable screen.

History

In 2006, Polymer Vision has first conceptualized the idea of a foldable screen. After that many companies has endeavoured to build a foldable screen. The main idea behind it is that companies want to give customers an option where they can use the device as a mobile phone as well as a tablet to enhance the customer experience and give it a name as ‘Phablet’. Many other companies such as Nokia, Kyocera, Royole, Xiaomi, etc. have also worked in the development of foldable displays.

Future Prospect

Foldable electronic displays are not limited to mobile devices but their application has been used in many devices. Curve television screens, laptops with foldable screens and many more. As this technology has gained so much popularity and has posed many opportunities for its development and as per Delvens’ market analysis global foldable display market is expected to grow with 32.4% CAGR in forthcoming years.

Recent Development

  • In the year 2022, a research group of scientists at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities has succeeded in 3D-printing the entirety of a flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for the first time.
  • ASUS unveiled its first-ever foldable laptop-tablet hybrid called the ZenBook 17-Fold OLED at CES 2022. The device features a 17-inch folding OLED display. It can fold in half and become a 12.5-inch clamshell laptop with an on-screen keyboard on its lower half.
