NSW Registration Eligibility Criteria For Engineers

If you are a professional engineer desiring NSW registration, then you are at the right place. Here, we will familiarize you with the eligibility criteria.

Knowing so, you will be able to better gear up for the registration under Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020.

If wishing for a certificate of competency given by Engineers Australia, you have to go through one of the three assessments for professional engineers given below.

Engineers Australia is evaluating 3 forms of competency assessment for registration of the professional engineer given below:

·     Competency Assessment PE1 for pre-1989 engineering qualification

·     Competency Assessment PE2 for below 2 years of the Australian experience

·     Competency Assessment PE3 for non-accredited experience and qualifications

PE1 (Competency Evaluation)

This eligibility assessment is for those with a qualification in engineering completed before establishing the Washington Accord in 1989.

Previously Evaluated qualifications:

You will be deemed having had your qualifications evaluated by Engineers Australia in the following cases:

1.   Holding currently CPEng status with Engineers Australia

2.   Being registered on Engineers Australia’s National Engineering Register NER as a professional engineer.

3.   Having received a result of a professional engineer from Engineers Australia’s MSA (Migration Skills Assessment).

4.   Having received a result of a professional engineer from an Engineers Australia’ Stage 1 Eligibility for Membership Assessment.

Not evaluated and not listed qualifications:

If not have qualifications previously evaluated by Engineers Australia, and your qualification is not on the Engineers Australia’s list of accredited programs as having been offered at the stage of Professional Engineer, you will be required to complete an entry to practice qualification evaluation. For this, you need to provide the following for NSW registration:

1.   Proof of all qualifications you have, which includes transcripts and testamurs. Scanned color copies at 300dpi are preferred.

2.   If any professional development, then its details.

3.   A verified resume, which includes the name and contact details of a referee, confirming your experience.

4.   3 career episodes (PDF), providing proof that you have shown all 16 Elements of Engineers Australia’s Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineers (PDF).

5.   Proof of any professional registration if you have.

6.   Proof of the capability of communicating in the English language (PDF).

PE2 (Competency Evaluation):

The NSW (New South Wales) government needs you to have a minimum of two years of building experience in Australia. If not have the required Australian experience, you need to complete an experienced assessment and show that either in Australia or abroad, you have had a minimum of 5 years of experience in the period of the last ten years working on buildings that are like a class 2, 3, 9a or 9c building.

For the assessment of the experience for NSW registration, you need to provide the following:

·     A verified resume, which includes the name and contact details of a referee confirming your experience.

·     3 career episodes (PDF), highlighting the building codes and criteria that you applied

·     Proof of any professional registration if you have.

P3 (Competency Evaluation):

This way is used when not qualifying equal to a Washington accord qualification. This evaluation takes your experiential learning and qualification into account. It is a must for you to have qualifications and experience related to the engineering area in which you are applying for registration.

It is available only until 30 June 2022.

Requirements:

The required experience for this competency assessment will be 10 years, or equivalent part-time, practical experience within a period of the last 15 years, which includes a minimum of two years of Australian experience. The practical experience has to be a class 2, 3, 9a, or 9c building (or a similar building overseas).

To get your qualifications and experience assessed for NSW registration, you need the following:

·     Proof of every qualification held, which includes transcripts or results, where required.

·     Details of formal and informal professional development relevant to the application. Professional development may include training and courses, and certification must be provided where possible.

·     A verified resume, which includes the name and contact details of the referee confirming the experience

·     3 career episodes (PDF).

·     Proof of any professional registration held.

·     Proof of having the ability to communicate well in English (PDF).

The Engineers Australia evaluator will review all the given proof against the 16 competencies of the Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineers (PDF).

For the successful result of a competency assessment PE3, you need to provide proof of having shown all 16 Stage 1 competencies. The least academic qualification required by Engineers Australia is a 3-year degree cognate to an engineering degree.
