Barite is a naturally occurring mineral that contains barium.

The mineralogical term for barium sulphate is barite, which comes from the Greek word "barus" (heavy). The mineral is sometimes referred to as "barytes" in commerce. The phrase "primary barite" refers to the initial commercial product, which comprises crude barite (run of mine) and products from simple beneficiation procedures such washing, jigging, heavy media separation, tabling, flotation, and magnetic separation. To achieve minimal purity or density, most crude barite must be upgraded.

Barite is crushed and screened to a consistent size before being used as an aggregate in a "heavy" cement. Before being employed as a filler or extender, an additive to industrial products, or a weighing agent in petroleum well drilling mud specification barite, most barite is ground to a small, uniform size. Despite the presence of a "heavy" metal (barium), barite is not considered a dangerous substance under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 due to its insoluble nature.
