How to lay a roll lawn?

How to lay a roll lawn?

Opt for grass in rolls for an immediate effect: a beautiful green and dense carpet impeccably mowed! All our advice for preparing the ground and laying the lawn patches.

Why choose sod?

- the laying is possible all year round, it is only necessary to avoid periods of frost or high heat.

- the lawn in patches gives an immediate effect, the space is immediately covered with a dense green carpet and impeccably mowed.

- the result is safe and homogeneous: no weeds or sparse lawn with holes without grass.

- roll grass is suitable for laying on sloping ground.

- no condemned area for months! You can fully use your lawn after 15-20 days.

How is a turf presented?

The ready-to-lay turf is delivered on a pallet. Each pallet contains 20 to 60 rolls and each roll is a perfectly rectangular plate of 40 cm x 250 cm, or 1 m². The pallet therefore makes it possible to cover a total surface of 20 to 60 m².

Preparing to lay a sod

Roll turf is easy and quick to lay. Before laying it, it is necessary to prepare the ground. Find out about delivery times, your floor must be ready the day before the delivery date.

Prepare the ground before laying the lawn

Prepare the ground

Before laying a lawn roll, as for sowing a lawn , it is necessary to prepare the soil . This preparation is done in the days preceding the delivery. The lawn is to be laid on topsoil. It does not require the addition of compost or soil , nor the addition of fertilizer . The plates are placed on clean, level ground.

Equipment : a spade, a tiller for large areas, a rake, a claw, a lawn roller .

- First of all, define the area where the lawn will be laid.

- If the surface is overgrown with tall grass, remove it by removing the top layer of soil with a spade. Push it horizontally so that you only remove the top layer and keep as much soil as possible.

- Plow the ground to a depth of 20cm using a tiller or a spade for smaller areas. Do not hesitate to go over the same place several times to loosen the soil and break up the clods.

- Crumble the soil on the surface using a claw

- Spread the soil evenly with the back of the rake.

- Rake to remove stones and remains of roots. Several passages are necessary for the floor to be clean. Proceed in a cross for a finer result.

- This raking also makes it possible to level the ground perfectly to avoid bumps or too sharp hollows which could create folds during the laying of the lawn patches.

- Tamp the ground, using a roller, to have a firm support.

Laying of sod

It is important to lay the turf quickly after receiving the rolls. Storage, in the shade and uncovered, must be as short as possible, 48 hours maximum in winter and 24 hours maximum in summer.

The land will have been prepared beforehand to allow you to devote yourself solely to the lawn on the day of delivery.

It takes 1 hour to lay 20 m² of slabs on prepared ground.

Equipment : a serrated knife, a watering can or garden hose , possibly knee pads

- Begin laying on the most perpendicular side of the surface to be turfed. This avoids additional cuts and unnecessary losses. Also start preferably at the bottom of the garden to avoid trampling the freshly laid lawn.

- In the case of slightly sloping ground, it is preferable to lay the plates perpendicular to the slope.

- Place the plates edge to edge, like parquet strips, in staggered rows and without overlapping them. The plates have been cut mechanically and are perfectly square, this allows easy installation and an impeccable finish.

- Be sure to stick them firmly to the ground, press the entire surface to spread the plate perfectly, so it spreads over its entire surface and the air bubbles are evacuated.

- The cuts are made using a serrated knife, such as a bread knife.

- At the end of laying, pass the roller so that the plates stick perfectly to the ground.

- Water abundantly, until the lawn is soaked: nearly 5 liters of water per m². The water binds the plates between them and ensures the good recovery of the roots.

Lawn maintenance

Watering

- Water your lawn regularly for the first few weeks, up to twice a day if the weather is hot.

- Then water according to the weather, regular watering in summer keeps the lawn very green.

Mowing

- the plates are delivered already mowed for a perfect result from the first day.

- the first mowing can be done 8 days after laying, only if necessary and do not mow more than 1/3 of the height of the blades of grass.

- it is however preferable to wait for the complete rooting of the grass, between 10 and 20 days, before starting mowing.

- keep at least 3 cm of grass, the shorter you cut, the more you encourage the appearance of moss.

- if you do not collect the mowed grass, it is advisable to mow often, once or twice a week depending on the season. Very grown lawns create a lot of waste which, left in place, suffocates the lawn.

Fertilization

- Do not start fertilizer until after a month of rooting, ie between 40 and 50 days after planting.

- then fertilize regularly every three months.

frequently asked Questions

Can I lay the rolled grass on a surface other than dirt?

The lawn can be maintained on concrete or bitumen... but it must then be provided with water and nutrition every day! Otherwise it will dry out very quickly.

For greater autonomy, you need at least 25 cm of topsoil under the plates. The soil retains moisture and it is no longer necessary to water every day. A weekly watering on average will suffice.

After how long can you fully use your new lawn?

The lawn can be used normally after the complete rooting of the plates, it is preferable to count about twenty days.

Delivery of rolled turf

How is the delivery going?

When you order, you will be contacted to validate the delivery conditions.

Delivery being made by heavy truck, 12m long and 2.5m wide, it is important to check compatibility with access to your home or choose a suitable unloading area. The pallets are unloaded at the back of the truck and on a flat area: the driver only takes care of bringing the lawn into your garden if he can pass his trans-pallet there. It won't fit in your house if there's a small curb in the way or areas that aren't passable with a hand pallet truck. You will then have to carry them by hand to bring them in, it is indeed forbidden to store pallets on the street which could hinder traffic. Each roll weighs between 15 and 20 kg.

After having validated these unloading conditions, a delivery date is chosen.

The evening before or the morning of the day of delivery, a machine, the sod cutter, takes your strips of grass from the lawn field. It automatically rolls the strips and packs them into pallets. These are filmed for good support.

The carrier picks them up from the producer and delivers them directly to you. All you have to do is put them down!
