Different Types of Sapphires and Their Colors

While blue sapphires have always been in the limelight the gemstone actually occurs in various colors. Different types of sapphires are available in these versatile colors which are contained under the umbrella term: Fancy Colored Sapphire. The colors of these gemstones are determined by the presence of trace chemicals in the gemstone.

1. Blue Sapphire

Blue sapphire is the most famous variety. In fact, the word sapphire comes from the Latin "saphirus" and the Greek “sapheiros", both of which mean blue. The shades range from sky blue to a decadent, deep-sea blue.

2. Yellow Sapphire

This sun-kissed variety of sapphire has emerged as a popular engagement ring gemstone. Traces of iron in the chemical composition of a yellow sapphire are responsible for its color. While saturation and shades vary, yellow sapphires in a distinct canary yellow color are the most sought after.

3. Pink Sapphire

Pink sapphires have also emerged as extremely popular engagement ring gemstones. Trace amounts of chromium in the chemical composition of a sapphire lend it a pink hue. The shades of pink vary from spicy hot pinks to airy, baby pinks.

4. Green Sapphire

Green sapphires resemble emeralds but have a greater diversity of shades depending on the amount of iron present in their chemical composition. Usually, green sapphires are electric green even though the color saturation varies.

5. Purple Sapphire

The shades of purple sapphire range from light hues of lilac to a deep reddish-purple. The color of the gemstone depends on the amount of vanadium present in it. Purple sapphires are rare and therefore, they are widely desired.

6. Orange Sapphire

Orange sapphires have one of the most eclectic range of shades. From a soft ethereal tangerine color to warm honey tones, there is a wide range of options when it comes to orange sapphires. A cocktail of chromium and iron lends the gemstone this gorgeous color.

7. Teal Sapphire

On a color chart, teal is where blue meets green. Teal sapphires are also rare and found most abundantly in Montana, USA. Their vivacious and unpredictable colors are exciting and make them one of the most sought after gemstones in the jewelry fashion industry.

8. White Sapphire

White sapphires have the potential to give diamonds a run for their money. White sapphires are the purest type of sapphires due to lack of inclusions. They are perfect for people who want something more affordable than natural diamonds without compromising on the optical effect of a diamond.

9. Padparadscha Sapphire

Madagascar has the largest reserves of Padparadscha sapphire which is a pinkish-orange colored sapphire. “Padparadscha” is the Sinhalese word for a lotus blossom, which is the same light salmon hue as the gemstone. The padparadscha sapphire is a delight to look at and has climbed the rungs of fame after embellishing the engagement ring of the Princess of York.

10. Color changing sapphires

Also known as the corundum chameleon, color changing sapphires are dichroic or trichroic, that is, they exhibit more than a single color. In the daylight they appear blue, green or purple but incandescent lighting will add flashes of, or make them appear entirely red, orange or pink. This quality is very unique and prized by gemstone connoisseurs.
