What are colonial storm shutters?

There are many styles of storm shutters. Some, like storm panels and roll down shutters are quite popular, especially in areas like Florida. But there are many styles of storm shutters that are not used as frequently. One of these is Colonial style hurricane shutters.

Colonial style shutters are a premium storm shutter that go well with homes that have (or are trying to achieve) a Southern look and feel. They resemble shutters that were common on Southern homes and mansions.

Colonial style shutters are permanent shutters that swing open and closed from the sides of your windows. One shutter is installed vertically on each side of each window.

When they are open, they look like normal, decorative shutters. But you can swing them closed. And when they are closed and locked in place they completely cover your windows.

Because they are made from impact resistant materials they help stop damage from wind gusts and flying objects during severe storms. This means they protect your glass windows from impact and breakage.

Not all storm shutter suppliers offer Colonial Shutters. It is hard to find them at big box stores as well. If you are in Southwest Florida there are some that do, such as Eurex Shutters. You may have to look for a supplier/installer that offers them.

If you are considering colonial storm shutters for your home in Florida you should make sure they are in fact impact resistant and not just decorative shutters. They should be rated up to a category 5 storm and meet all appropriate building codes.

You should also find a reputable installer with high quality products.
