Avoid Dengue by Following these Tips

One pesky mosquito is all that it takes to push you into a battle with death. Dengue is one deadly virus that has claimed millions of lives. And continues to do so.

There’s intense lab work going on around the world to make people immune to the virus. Until the time comes, people need to take up the responsibility and protect themselves against the virus.

In this article, we shall discuss dengue and how to prevent it.

What’s dengue?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease. (Annelies Wilder-Smith, 2012) It has four types and is spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Truth be told, there’s no direct cure for the virus. There are medicines available to help the body cure the symptoms and strengthen it enough so that the virus is dealt with without causing a casualty.

It affects millions of people around the globe and takes away thousands of lives. With proper identification of the symptoms, the disease can be managed. But there are some simple ways that you can implement to prevent catching the virus.

First, let’s look at the symptoms that you shall be mindful of when identifying dengue:

Symptoms

The routine symptoms for dengue patients include:

-         Headache

-         Eye pain (typically behind the eyes)

-         Muscle, joint, or bone pain

-         Rash

-         Nausea and vomiting

If timely attention isn’t paid, then the problem can aggravate, and symptoms can intensify. Severe cases can display the following symptoms:

-         Extreme pain in the stomach. This may even result in severe tiredness.

-         Vomiting; mild to severe.

-         The nose may start bleeding.

-         Blood coming out in vomit or stool.

-         Feelings of unsettlement, tiredness, or jumpiness.

If you notice these signs in anyone, divert them to medical attention immediately. If you experience the symptoms yourself, then you must visit the ER without failure.

With all that said, let’s now move to the clinical preventative measures that you can implement to avoid dengue fever.

Preventive measures

Dengue is a preventable disease. Unlike the recent Covid-19 virus, it doesn’t spread amongst the human species. Simply put, a dengue patient cannot pass on the disease to someone else.

This makes the disease a controlled one. With pristine personal responsibility, you can easily keep the disease out of your way. Here are a few things that’ll help:

-         Use an insect repellent

Kill the mosquito, kill the virus. Make sure that you regularly use insect repellent to make sure you aren’t at risk of catching the virus. When you go to the store, ensure that you get something that’s specifically made to kill mosquitoes.

A general insect repellent may satisfactorily do the trick as well.

-         Wear the right clothes

Exposing your skin can invite the mosquitoes to pass on the disease to you. By simply hiding the skin with ample clothing, you can reduce the chances of catching the virus. Make full-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks.

-         Protect yourself with the net

Netting the house sufficiently can keep the mosquitoes away. Mosquito nets are made up of tiny holes that make the place breathable but not permeable enough for the culprit to enter.

-         Don’t leave the water stagnant

Dengue mosquitoes thrive on standing water. If you have such places where water stays for more than 3 to 4 days, then address that. Usually, you need to empty such places routinely.

-         Avoid dark places

Mosquitoes love to live in the dark. Especially in the garden and forest settings. Make sure you aren't outdoors where dengue mosquitoes exist. If you absolutely have to be there, then apply mosquito repellent creams without failure.

Final Words

Dengue virus usually gets managed and cured over a period of 10 to 14 days. However, cases that become severe accelerate to the levels of taking life.

It is always better to take the right measures and keep the virus out of your way.
