Here is what All about Adult Umbilical Hernia Surgery

For many new mothers, adult umbilical hernia surgery is a must.  An umbilical hernia is one of the possible complications that occur after pregnancy.  Umbilical hernias are not limited to recent mothers.

Defining Adult Umbilical Hernia Surgery

An umbilical hernia requires surgery when the musculature surrounding the belly button (umbilicus) fails, thus creating an aperture through which the contents of the abdominal cavity can protrude.  This aperture is what physicians term a hernia—that is, a hernia is any break in the muscles through which bodily contents may balloon out.  This problem typically occurs after childbirth when the umbilical cord no longer performs its nutritive function from this location.

Usually, only a tiny part of the abdominal wall pokes through an umbilical hernia, because of its minuscule dimensions.  However, in more severe instances, the hernia may expand to a dangerous size, allowing parts of other organs to slip out as well.

Although hernias are most common at birth, some do occur in adults.  In grown-ups, umbilical hernias usually occur after pregnancy when the umbilical cord may have stressed the belly button.  It may also present after a surgical procedure in that area or in obese patients.  When present in more mature patients, adult umbilical hernia surgery is necessary.

Adult Umbilical Hernia Surgery

Surgery becomes a necessity when the hernia becomes “strangulated,” that is when the protruding organic material—termed the “hernial sac”--becomes caught in the herniated aperture.  The muscles surrounding the belly button work like a tourniquet, tightening around the opening in such a way that it hampers blood flow, killing the escaped organic matter in the hernial sac.

Typically, although not exclusively, this process manifests with intense discomfort, inflammation, nausea, regurgitation, and runny stoles.  The trapped blood in the organic material will typically tinge it dark vermillion or even a plum color.

Adult umbilical hernia surgery is major surgery and you should not take it lightly.  The patient is put under for the duration of the surgery and should take proper precautions beforehand as well as having someone to drive them home afterward and to take care of them afterward.

During the operation, the surgeon will loosen the aperture of the hernia by making a careful incision in it.  The surgeon then replaces the displaced organic material back into its proper context inside the body cavity.

When the opening is of inferior size, the hernia itself is usually sutured shut, so that the aperture of the hernia will not slip open again at a later date.  When the hernia is of superior size (larger than a bottle cap), however, the physician will place a covering over the hernial aperture rather than risk overly straining the muscles closed with just sutures.  The surgeon stitches this cap right into the umbilical muscles in order to hold it permanently in place.  This “cap” prevents bodily material from any repeat escapes from their natural interior positions.

This capping method is not appropriate for all patients, however.  If you have a history of negative reactions to foreign bodies or other health complications that lead your surgical team to believe the chance for adverse outcomes is likely, they may use the suture method for your larger hernia as well.  When health conditions make hernial sutures necessary, the chance of another episode rises dramatically.

Exterior traces of adult umbilical hernia surgery are usually undetectable without close inspection of the belly bottom.  Your physician will remove exterior stitches during a subsequent appointment when he or she will also evaluate the success of the surgery.

Recovery

Recovery usually takes about three weeks.  During the first week, pain medication will help with soreness and sensitivity.  Your Hernia surgery specialist in Coimbatore will also direct you on how to properly care for and clean your umbilical area so that you do not risk infection or re-injury.
