If you have kidney stones, you want to do everything possible to get rid of them as fast as possible and to prevent them from returning. Many factors, including genetics, can play a role.

There are several kidney stones types, calcium oxalate being the most common by far. These consist of calcium and a substance called oxalate that's found in many foods. Some people assume that they need to avoid calcium because that is contained in the name. However, your body needs calcium and a deficiency of this mineral can actually increase the chances of getting kidney stones. It's the oxalate you need to be concerned about.

Avoiding high oxalate foods can be tricky at first. One reason for this is that many of these foods are ones you probably think of as healthy. For example, spinach and other green leafy vegetables are in this category. Spinach, in fact, is one of the highest oxalate foods of all. The other tricky factor is that you can't always generalize about categories of foods. For example, some nuts and some beans are high oxalate but others are fine. The following are some common calcium oxalate foods to avoid.
