Types Of Drawers Slides

Nowadays Drawers can be built with various materials. This could be wood, many wood composites, sheet metal, or even plastic. So let's learn a bit about the handles and locks of modern-day drawers. One or two handles or drawer pulls may be applied on the front face of the drawer. Sometimes holes are cut into the front face to pull the drawer open or a hollowed-out area can be made at the bottom side of the drawer. Some drawers can be locked.

When we talk about the movement we talk about drawer slides. They have a mechanism to keep the drawer from accidentally being pulled out completely from its enclosure. There are two main types of slides that prevent the drawer from popping out completely.

Drawers can be classified by the types of slide mechanism, they might be using.

There are wooden slides where the drawer rests directly on the cabinet.

Then there are wheel drawer slides. It uses a simple mechanism that can handle heavy loads. However, the drawer cannot be fully extended, except when you are removing it.

Then there are ball bearing slides using small steel balls as ball bearings for smoothness in operation.

Then there are Telescoping ball-bearing drawer slides allowing full extension of the drawer, giving better access to the inside of the drawer. They are manufactured using a drawer slides roll-making machine and have outer, inner, and middle rails. They can be made with a soft-close mechanism. They are also called 3-section slides.

Then there are types of mounting or placement.

Side-mounted slide: Most of the slides are side-mounted, which leaves them visible when the drawer is opened. There are concealed slides mounted on the underside of the drawer.

Under mounted slides: These are bottom-mounted, by the sides on the bottom of the drawer. This leaves them hidden when the drawer is opened. Under-mounted slides, with a soft-close mechanism, have ball bearings. Due to their being more complicated, they are more expensive than side-mounted slides.

Then there are center-mounted slides. Which are mounted near the bottom center of the drawer. Usually concealed while opening the drawer. They are usually used when loads of the drawer are lighter.

The soft-close mechanism makes the drawer open very softly by slowing down its velocity in the last part of closing, then it closes automatically. The drawer gives a gentle push to operate the mechanism and the drawer comes into place quietly. This is without any slamming.
