Types of HDMI Cables You Should Know About

Depending somewhat on the signal transfer speed (bandwidth) and the HDMI version with which the cables are coupled, HDMI cables have varied capabilities. Before you think too much about which HDMI Cable to buy for your requirement, the following are some common types of HDMI cable which you should know:

Standard HDMI Cable: These cables have a bandwidth capability of up to 5 Gbps and are designed for mainstream HDTV broadcast, cable, and satellite TV resolutions (up to 720p and 1080i). It works with HDMI versions 1.0 to 1.2a.

Normal Automotive HDMI Cable: Similar to a standard HDMI cable, this cable is used to link portable or in-car DVD players and other devices to in-car video screens. To prevent interference from other automotive electrical systems and wiring, extra shielding is provided.

High-Speed HDMI Cable: This type of cable is capable of handling video resolutions of 1080p and 4K (30 Hz), as well as 3D and Deep Color. Transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps are possible. It works with HDMI versions 1.3 to 1.4a.

High-Speed Automotive HDMI Cable: This type has the same features as High-Speed HDMI cables, but it is designed specifically for use in automobiles.

Premium High-Speed HDMI Cable: This cable is designed to transfer 4K/UltraHD definition video with high reliability, including 4K/60 Hz, HDR, and a wider color gamut. The cable capacity is 18 Gbps, and it is optimized for HDMI 2.0/a/b.

Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable: This cable has all of the features of the previous cables, plus the ability to support 8K video with HDR and even 10K resolution. It has a bandwidth (transfer speed) of up to 48 Gbps and is less prone to EMI (electromagnetic interference) generated by some wireless devices. This cable is designed to work with HDMI version 2.1.

HDMI to Ethernet Cables Built-in: There are other HDMI cables that support an additional HDMI Ethernet Channel, including Standard, High-Speed, Premium High-Speed, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cables (HEC). Multiple HDMI-connected devices can share a single standard Ethernet connection to a broadband connection at speeds of up to 100 Mb/sec with these cables. On most smartphones, however, this option is not available.
