A carport guards against rain, snow, hail, and dust. A carport can be attached to a house or built separately. Carports are often only a roof with one open side. Carports can also be used as covered patios, storage, or a solar panel platform. Adding a 2 vehicle carport to your home is an easy woodworking project.
- Build a Carport!
Here are the basic steps of creating a carport from wood or steel:
- Make a sketch
Clear the space and indicate the perimeters. Set up little obstacles in the ground for your string lines.
- Lines
Set up a rectangle of string between each obstacle the size of the carport. If you remove them, the string becomes the post footings.
- Ensure squareness
If the pegs aren't square, measure diagonally.
- Set up posts
Pre-drill four holes for stakes in each corner. Your metal garages Greensboro NC building permit will usually mention the hole's size and depth.
- Cement
One by one, cement each post hole. Insert a post saddle 25mm above the wet cement. Rep for the other three holes, checking for level with a spirit level.
- Post signage.
Postings can be made after a week or two. Don't forget to hold the saddle while you level it with the spirit level. Drill a hole in the post and secure it with a coach bolt and nut.
- Create a datum
This line guarantees a level carport roof. Then, using a spirit level, mark the same height on all four upright posts. Unbolt the poles and trim them to the roof.
- Beams fixation
While the posts are down, cut the housings (notches) for the beams. Repost with a friend's help. Lay the side beams horizontally, flush with the carport's exterior. Coach screw the side beams to the posts.
- Install rafters
Set the roof's rainfall first. Nail a string line 40mm below the other nail on one of the side beams. Rep on the other side beam, and then nail a batten along each string line. Cut your battens to the width of your side beams and nail them every 900mm.
- Set up gutter and pipe
Begin with the carport's gutter (the back). Make sure it runs down the downpipe. Downpipe to the nearest storm drain.
- Build a roof
Fasten the steel roof sheeting to the rafters inside the side beams. Finally, install cap flashing over the roof-to-beam edge.
